Third Year Physical Therapist Student
Objectives of the Clinical Experience:
- Demonstrate professional appearance and behavior.
- Demonstrate professional skills.
- Demonstrate the ability to build patient/client rapport.
- Demonstrate verbal and written ability to collect data from patient/client interview, medical record, and examination in accordance with PM&R and University Hospital policy.
- Demonstrate ability to interpret objective data collected.
- Perform program planning, patient reexamination, and modification of the plan of care.
- Generate short- and long-term patient functional goals.
- Demonstrate the ability to explain and apply therapeutic modalities appropriately.
- Document patient care accurately, concisely, clearly and legibly.
- Demonstrate the ability to teach home programs to patients and their families/caregivers.
- Demonstrate efficient time management skills.
Performance Expectations:
The third year PT student will be expected to perform the following with the supervision and assistance of a clinical instructor:
- Musculoskeletal examination skills including but not limited to goniometry, strength assessments, postural analysis, gait analysis, and sensory testing.
- Perform patient examinations and evaluation, and implement plan of care for patients.
- Written documentation of patient examination and evaluation, progress and discharge documentation written in a clear, concise and legible manner in accordance with PM&R and University Hospital policy.
- Administration of modalities and therapeutic exercise appropriate to the patient’s impairments and functional limitations.
- Provide rationale for treatment approach and goals.
- Exhibit self-directed learning skills.
- Communicate appropriately with patients, staff, clinical educators, physicians and other health professionals in clinical settings.
- Perform basic administrative skills including scheduling, billing and participation in staff meetings.
- Perform an educational in-service to staff.
- Perform self-assessments on a daily and weekly and cumulative basis.
- Participate in informal and formal self-evaluations with the CI(s) including completion of the CPI at midterm and final evaluations.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Discuss and plan individual objectives with the CCCE and CI.
- Discuss and modify patient examination, plan of care, and interventions with the CI.
- Demonstrate proper body mechanics and safety awareness.
- Demonstrate proper verbal and non-verbal communication with patient, family/caregivers, staff, health professionals and other students.
- Participate in various educational experiences as assigned by the CI.
