FRED

The following is an exercise designed to create a visual rendering of the recently discovered, horribly destructive, computer virus known as "FRED".
FRED is the sixth virus found in the new family of CRYSTALLINE viruses. This type of virus attacks the crystalline structure of your microchip. They virtually self-replicate directly onto the chips in your computer with the result being, over time, the mutilation of all saved data. It happens so slowly that you are almost unaware anything is wrong, until it is too late.
Computer analysts are working around the clock to identify and diffuse these "virtual data bombs." As an informed individual, we felt you would be interested in viewing the basic structure of these techno-crystal demons.
Follow the steps outlined below, and you will have the basic structure before your eyes.
Follow these direction very carefully.
You will need a very sharp pencil, ruler, compass, and a piece of graph paper at least 32 blocks wide and 43 blocks tall.
Check off each instruction as you complete it.
PART A
check . / 1 / Hold your graph paper vertically and draw your "x" and "y" axes the entire width and length of the page. Be sure to label these axes.
. / 2 / Beginning at the origin (0,0) place light tick marks on every other line along both axes, and then number them by two's with small numbers. Number both axes until you run off the paper on all four edges.
. / 3 / Now use a compass to draw a circle with its center at the origin (0,0) and with a radius of ten blocks.
. / 4 / Now, inside the circle, draw and label these horizontal and vertical line segments. Keep the segments contained inside the circle; do not draw past the circle's border.
y = 8...... be sure to label all of these with their equations
. / 5 / y = 7
. / 6 / x = -7
. / 7 / x = -6
PART B

Find the slope (m) and y intercept (b) for each line. Then graph these boundary lines THE ENTIRE WAY ACROSS THE PAGE and shade their intersection.

check / 8.) y >= x -10 / check / 9.) y >= -x - 10
. / m = / . / m =
. / b = / . / b =
. / graph and label / . / graph and label
Check / 10.) y <= -x + 10 / check / 11.) y <= x + 10
. / m = / . / m =
. / b = / . / b =
. / graph and label / . / graph and label
PART C

In steps 12 thru 19, rearrange the following equations into y = mx + b (slope intercept) form to find the slope for each. Then draw a RAY, using the slope and the starting point given in the last column of each row. These rays should shoot OUT of the circle AWAY from its center.

These rays will form symmetrical "spikes" on the crystal "FRED".

Continue each ray to the edge of the paper.
Labeleach ray with the y = mx + b form of the equation.
Step / equation of ray / y = mx + b form (show how you get to this from the original equation) / slope = m / starting point
12 / (-1/3)x + y = 0 / .
. / . / (9,3)
13 / -x + 2y = 2 / .
. / . / (-9,-3)
14 / 3y + x = 0 / . / . / (-9,3)
15 / -5x + 2y = -4 / .
. / . / (4,8)
16 / 2y + x = 2 / .
. / . / (9,-3)
17 / y + 1 = 2x / .
. / . / (-4,-8)
18 / -5x - 2y = 4 / .
. / . / (-4,8)
19 / -4x = 2y + 2 / .
. / . / (4,-8)
At this point, you should be looking at a fairly good blueprint of this menacing virus.
It's crystaline form includes some EXTREMELY sharp, yet perfectly symmetrical spikes.
