Week of Feb.29th-March 4th

There is a dictationonAirthis week. There is the new reading log for March, so make sure that they turn in February’s by this Tuesday. There are phonics, math and science pages this week. All is due on Friday as usual. There are two field trip forms in this packet. The one for the zoo is a bit complicated because of zoo passes. There are two fee options. If you have a zoo pass please photocopy it – both sides and send it in with the completed form. Planning field trips are often difficult to coordinate so please bear with me. Please make out one check to OLL. They are also allow children to experience curriculum in meaningful ways. If I do collect more than I need for some reason, I will apply it to the Seattle Art Museum field trip in May. The mile run has been planned on the same day as the zoo trip, so after we eat lunch at the zoo, we will drive straight to the track at Nathan Hale. Usually the 2nd grade is the last to run. The children will be walking back to school with the rest of the classes.

Please make sure that they have turned in their biography title page from last week. Students may draw/illustrate their title page or print off pictures of their famous African American and glue them onto the page. It can be their choice.

Our second graders have been working hard on their biographies for their famous African American. This may have been first time that they have heard the terms: introduction, body and conclusion. The new common core standards focus more on informational reading and writing than in the past and our school is aligning the curriculum with these new standards. This Wednesday March 2nd, they will read their biographies. They may come to school dressed as their famous African American or come in uniform. Thank you to those parents that are bringing the snacks and drinks to the presentations. We will meet at 12:45 pm in Jubilee Hall.

We will continue to discuss Lent and will focus on the theme of following Jesus. Students are reading a Lenten prayer each morning to focus on being more mindful of our actions with others. The theme for Lent is Building a Relationship with God. God is with us always, but particularly during Lent, our students will be focusing how we can detect God's constant presence in our lives through each other.

On Wednesday March 23rd from 12:00-1:00 pm, the 2nd grade and the 5th grade will be celebrating a Seder Meal together. By participating in this event, our second graders will have a deeper understanding of the Passover meal Jesus celebrated with his disciplines and the significance of the instructions that Jesus gave them. Mrs. B. will be asking parents to help with set up, specific food for the event and help with clean up.

Last week, we started our Soils unit. We are talking a lot about soil and what makes up soil. On Thursday we made composting bags with red worms as the decomposers. On Friday, we looked at some more components of soil: sand, clay and humus. Today the children will take a closer look at red worms and compare them to earthworms. Mrs. M.will also bring in her 3-tier worm bin for the children to examine.

Lisa G. was able to order our bulk seeds for our fund raiser and we will be putting the seed packets together on Wednesday March 9th. When we have an accurate total of our fundraising efforts, I will let you know how much we actually raised.  Thank you Mrs. G. and Mrs. C. for taking time out of your busy day to order the seeds. Thank you Miss J. for keeping track of all the orders and making an organized tally.

This week,Andy L.will be God’s special child. When it is his week,he may share his poster on Monday and have a Show-and-Tell on Tuesday. Lauren W.will be the following week of March 7-11.

Have a great week!
