The Opportunity

Gilda's Club Greater Toronto (GCGT) is seeking an experienced fund raising professional to join our management team as Director of Development.

To further the goals of Gilda’s Club Greater Toronto, the Director of Development will provide leadership in planning, developing, and successfully implementing an overall development program including Major Gifts and Planned Giving programs to meet the strategic and annual goals of GCGT.

The Director of Development will have a strong background in major gift solicitation and in closing gifts $25,000 and over, along with the ability to build strong relationships with prospective and current donors, board members, government, senior leadership and development team members.

Gilda’s Club Greater Toronto, a registered charityoffers social, emotional and practical support for anyone touched by cancer- adults, teens, children, as well as their families and friends. Our innovative program, provided free of charge, is an essential complement to medical treatments and has been called “the missing link in the cancer care system”.

Our goal is to ensure all people impacted by any type of cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action and sustained by community. GCGT offers an extensive program roster of support and networking groups, education, arts & technology-based workshops, interactive healthy life-styles seminars, social and recreational activities.

The Gilda’s Club philosophy is based on the belief that a diagnosis of cancer affects the whole family, as well as family and friends, and that no one should have to face cancer alone.

Gilda’s Club Greater Toronto is a licensed affiliate member of the highly regarded Cancer Support Community International which has an Affiliate Network consisting of over 200 locations worldwide, including 50 licensed affiliates and healthcare partners. There are now over 20 Gilda’s Clubs in North America.

Position Title:Director of Development

Reports to:Chief Executive Officer

Key Responsibilities:

The Director will have overall responsibility for the development, coordination, implementation and evaluation of the Gilda’s Club Development Program. S/he will work in co-operation with the Chief Executive Officer and key volunteers to increase the fund development capabilities of Gilda’s Club Greater Toronto, including but not necessarily limited to the following:

  • Develop a 3- year fundraising plan and budget for the development department which supports organizational activities and our strategic plan.
  • Provides strategic advice on fund development to the Board of Directors through the Chief Executive Officer.
  • Works with the CEO and board to ensure Gift Acceptance and Recognition policies are up to date
  • Works with the Chief Executive Officer to ensure appropriate and effective strategies and systems are in place to identify new donors and supporting communities, to cultivate and educate potential donors and to recognize, engage and steward all donors
  • Actively manages a portfolio of prospects to attain specific annual goals
  • Strategizes with the CEO and senior volunteers on solicitation of lead gifts
  • Assists the Board with the execution of a Major Gifts Campaign
  • Directs the implementation of an annual giving program
  • Directs the implementation of a planned giving program
  • Oversees the work of the fund raising group(s) that work on special events and fundraising activities
  • Updates and oversees the implementation of the donor recognition program
  • Oversees the management of the donor database, receipting and acknowledgement systems
  • Identifies new ways to market, communicate and promote Gilda's Club Greater Toronto and its giving program
  • Participates in the identification and recruitment of volunteers
  • Conducts ongoing evaluation of the giving program
  • Keeps up to date with advancements in philanthropy and maintains familiarity with Canada Revenue Agency guidelines for charitable giving
  • Other duties from time to time as they relate to the philanthropy program

Qualifications and Competencies of the Ideal Candidate

  • Polished professional and high achiever with a minimum of 5years of successful fund development experience with demonstrated results, working in a policy governance environment
  • Motivational leader/mentor committed to shared learning
  • Self-starter who will proactively seek and explore untapped potential in our community
  • Innovative thinker, creative problem-solverwith a passion to succeed and make a difference
  • Engaging communicator withstrong interpersonal verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present in public
  • Ability to work with a diverse team, be flexible, adaptable and have a good sense of humour
  • CFRE designation, member of AFP an asset
