What is CAYPELS?

CAYPELS stands for Children’s and Young People Equipment Loan Service.

CAYPELS provides specialised equipment for loan such as wheelchairs, seating systems, hoists, standing frames, walking frames, postural support cushions, personal care items, shower commodes, bath chairs and communication devices. Where there is a long term need for equipment this scheme will enable clients to access required equipment to trial whilst funding is being sourced.

CAYPELS does not provide:-

 Medical management equipment - ventilation, suction or feeding pumps.

 Specialised car seats (these are provided by Kidsafe)

 Standard information technology equipment such as laptops

 Standard educational equipment such as desks and chairs

 Equipment that is highly specialised or requires modifications so that it is suitable for only one person

Who can use CAYPELS?

The loan service is available to residents of the ACT up to and including the age of 16, who require specialised equipment. CAYPELS does not provide an assessment and prescription service and clients must be scripted and fitted for the equipment by their treating clinician (either public or private sector). Treating clinicians include Speech Pathologists, Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists.

How long can I trial the equipment for?

Equipment is available for trial by clinicians for 2 weeks upon providing CAYPELS with a Clinician Loan Deed Schedule. Equipment can be loaned to the client for up to 3 months upon submitting a Client Loan Deed Schedule to CAYPELS. Equipment can be loaned to clients in non residential settings for 1 term in an educational setting (schools or preschools) or up to 3 months (childcare centres or respite centre) with the submission of an Equipment Loan Deed Schedule.

Where is CAYPELS located?

CAYPELS is located at the Holder Centre 26 Weingarth St (the old Holder Primary School).
