Course Description: This course focuses on the skills of the oncology therapist, with a special emphasis on the post mastectomy client. General information about the medical treatment for a wide variety of cancer will be reviewed, with a focus on the role of the therapist before, during, and after diagnosis and treatment. Evidence-based practice strategies to assess and treat cancer-related fatigue, as well as manual techniques for post-surgical and radiation fibrosis will be discussed. With cancer survivorship and its sequelae becoming the fastest growing chronic illness, don’t miss this opportunity to learn how best to impact this diverse patient population.

Course Objectives:

1) Describe an overview of all of the phases of cancer care and how rehabilitation can play an important role

2) Apply demographic information to best plan for future practice needs

3) Describe an overview of the oncology PT and OT’s scopes of practice

4) Briefly explore psychosocial skills sets needed for this patient population

5) Identify manual and therapeutic exercise dosing skill sets for the competent oncology rehabilitation therapist

6) Expand the understanding of how all phases of care –pre, during and post treatment opportunities improve function and quality of life

7) Identify the evidence-based approaches to assessment and intervention of Cancer-Related Fatigue (CRF)

Course Instructor: Holly Lookabaugh-Deur is a practicing physical therapist with 35 years of clinical experience. Her private practice, Generation Care, centers around comprehensive, intensive PT, OT, and SLP care, integrating wellness options for all clients. Holly has a BS in physical therapy from the University of Connecticut, Masters of Health Sciences from Grand Valley State University, and a Doctor of Science in Geriatric Physical Therapy from Rocky Mountain University. Holly also holds Board Certification as a Geriatric Clinical Specialist from the APTA. Lookabaugh-Deur is currently in an advanced training program for Oncology Rehabilitation and works with a lymph transplant team in Grand Rapids. She has published research in areas of incontinence management and fall prevention, and teaches aquatic therapy for CMU PT students. Holly is an active member of the MPTA Board of Directors and currently serves as the chair of the professional development and membership committees. This year, her clinical focus has been the completion of a certification as an exercise expert for aging adults (CEEAA) and oncology rehabilitation program development.

Course Schedule: This course will run from 8:45 am to 3:30 pm. Registration begins at 8:15 am. Mid morning refreshments and lunch will be provided.
