Challenge 3

Gabbling in Greek

Even though the Romans were in control, Greek was the common language that everyone spoke. This was because the Romans had conquered the Greek empire – and the language just kind of hung around.

Now Greek was the language that the New Testament was written in. (You know of course that the Old Testament was written in Hebrew.)

Greek was written with an alphabet surprisingly like ours – and that is because our alphabet actually evolved out of the Greek one.

The weirdest thing about the Greek was that they used very little punctuation – in particular no capitals, no full-stops and not even gaps between the words. Very occasionally this has made it hard to understand butmostofthetimepeoplecanjust workoutwhereonewordstartsandthe
