V.TO JESUS THROUGH MARY:
Reflecting on the Life of Jesus through the mysteries of the Rosary
I. THE MYSTERY OF JESUS’ BIRTH
Leader:Jesus is born in Bethlehem of Judea
A reading from the Gospel of Luke.
When the great army of angels had returned again to heaven, the shepherds said to each other, “Come on! Let’s go to Bethlehem! Let’s see this wonderful thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”
They ran to the village and found their way to Mary and Joseph. And there was the baby, lying in the manger. The shepherds told everyone what had happened and what the angel had said to them about this child. All who heard the shepherds’ story expressed astonishment, but Mary quietly treasured these things in her heart and often thought about them.
(Pause for quiet reflection)
L: Our Father…
All: Give us this day…
(The Hail Mary is prayed ten times in this manner)
L: Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus, who is good news of great joy for all the people.
All: Holy Mary…
L: Glory…
All: As it was in the beginning…
Priest/Leader
Let us pray.
Lord Christ, to celebrate your coming among us,
You chose servants to reveal your presence:
From among the angels, Gabriel
From the human race, the Virgin Mary,
From the heavens, a guiding star,
From the prophets, John the Baptist,
From earth’s waters, the Jordan
In which you washed away our sins
And made us children of the Most High
Who lives and reigns forever and ever.
Amen.
II. THE MYSTERY OF JESUS’ PUBLIC MINISTRY
Leader:The Wedding Feast of Cana
A reading from the Gospel of John
Two days later Jesus’ mother was a guest at a wedding in the village of Cana in Galilee, and Jesus and his disciples were invited too. The wine supply ran out during the festivities, and Jesus’ mother came to him with the problem. “I can’t help you now,” he said. “It isn’t yet my time for miracles.” But his mother told the servants, “Do whatever he tells you to.”
Six stone waterpots were standing there; they were used for Jewish ceremonial purposes and held perhaps twenty to thirty gallons each. Then Jesus told the servants to fill them to the brim with water. When this was done he said, “Dip some out and take it to the master of ceremonies.”
When the master of ceremonies tasted the water that was now wine, not knowing where it had come from (though, of course, the servants did), he called the bridegroom over. “This is wonderful stuff!” he said. “You’re different from most. Usually a host uses the best wine first, and afterwards, when everyone is full and doesn’t care, then he brings out the less expensive brands. But you have kept the best for the last!”
This miracle at Cana in Galilee was Jesus’ first public demonstration of his heaven-sent power. And his disciples believed that he really was the Messiah. After the wedding he left for Capernaum for a few days with his mother, brothers, and disciples.
(Pause for quiet reflection)
(Repeat the prayers Our Father, 10 Hail Mary, Glory be and end with the prayer for the specific mystery)
Priest/Leader
Let us pray.
Lord and Savior,
At the suggestion of your mother Mary,
You lavished your care on the wedding in Cana.
By her loving intercession,
Come to our assistance in our hour of need
And help us to read the signs of your presence in our lives and the lives of others.
May you reign in our hearts forever and ever.
Amen.
III. THE MYSTERY OF JESUS’ PASSION
Leader:Jesus is crucified, dies on the cross and is buried
A reading from the Gospel of Mark..
It was about nine o’clock in the morning when the crucifixion took place.
A signboard was fastened to the cross above Jesus’ head, announcing his crime. It read, “The King of the Jews.”
Two robbers were also crucified that morning, their crosses on either side of his. And so the Scripture was fulfilled that said, “He was counted among evil men.”
The people jeered at him as they walked by, and wagged their heads in mockery. “Ha! Look at you now!” they yelled at him. “Sure, you can destroy the Temple and rebuild it in three days! If you’re so wonderful, save yourself and come down from the cross.”
The chief priests and religious leaders were also standing around joking about Jesus. “He’s quite clever at ‘saving’ others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself!”
“Hey there, Messiah!” they yelled at him. “You ‘King of Israel’! Come on down from the cross and we’ll believe you!” And even the two robbers dying with him cursed him.
About noon, darkness fell across the entire land, lasting until three o’clock that afternoon.
Then Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” (“My God, my God, why have you deserted me?”)
(Pause for quiet reflection)
(Repeat the prayers Our Father, 10 Hail Mary, Glory be and end with the prayer for the specific mystery)
Priest/Leader
Let us pray.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God,
set your passion, your cross, and your death
between your judgment and our souls,
now and at the hour of our death.
In your great goodness,
grant mercy and grace to the living
and forgiveness and rest to the dead;
and to the church and to the nations peace and concord;
and to us sinners life and glory without end.
Amen.
IV. THE GLORY OF MARY OUR QUEEN
Leader:The Coronation of Mary and the Glory of All the Saints
A Reading from the Book of Revelations.
Then a great pageant appeared in heaven, portraying things to come.
I saw a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon beneath her feet,
and a crown of twelve stars on her head.
(Pause for quiet reflection)
(Repeat the prayers Our Father, 10 Hail Mary, Glory be and end with the prayer for the specific mystery)
Priest/Leader
Let us pray.
Almighty ever-living God,
who assumed the Immaculate Virgin Mary, the Mother of your Son,
body and soul into heavenly glory,
grant, we pray, that, always attentive to the things that are above,
we may merit to be sharere of her glory.
Through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
VI.POINTS FOR REFLECTION
(From Pope Francis’ homily at Fatima on 13 May 2017
Dear pilgrims, we have a Mother. Clinging to her like children, we live in the hope that rests on Jesus. As we heard…“those who receive the abundance of the grace and the free gift of righteousness exercise dominion in life through the one man, Jesus Christ” (Rom 5:17).
When Jesus ascended to heaven, he brought to the Heavenly Father our humanity, which he assumed in the womb of the Virgin Mary and will never forsake. Like an anchor, let us fix our hope on that humanity, seated in heaven at the right hand of the Father (cf. Eph 2:6).
May this hope guide our lives! It is a hope that sustains us always, to our dying breath.
(SHORT MOMENT OF REFLECTION - 5 to 7 minutes)
