TheVictorianGovernmentcreatedtheLowerGoulburnNationalPark,alongwithothernewand expandedparks,inJune2010toprotectandenhancetheRiverRedGumforestsinVictoria.

TheforestsalongtheGoulburnRiver,particularlyareasclosetoShepparton,arepopularforcamping,fishing,canoeing,bushwalking andavarietyofotherrecreationalactivities.
Canoeing–conditionsforcanoeingare enhancedby thesummerreleasesofwaterfromLakeEildon.
Sightseeing andpicnicking–enjoymanyscenicviewsalongtheriverfromhighriverbanks.
Swimmingispopular,particularlyneartownships wheretheriveriseasilyaccessible.
Fishing-ThisstretchoftheGoulburn isfairlyshallow withplentyofsnags,sopreferredboatingisbysmallercraft.Steepbankspredominatelylinetheriver,with sandbarsandaccesspointsdotted throughout. Informalboatrampsarescatteredalongtheriveratpopularaccesspoints.
RiverRed Gums
RiverRedGumforestshavehighnatural,culturaland economicvalues.Theseforestsarecomingunderincreasingpressurefromclimatechange,droughtand reducedwaterflowsinthenorthernrivers.Protecting thispreciousenvironmentreliesonbalancing economicandrecreationalactivitieswithpreserving itsnaturalbeautyandvalues.
RiverRedGumslinetheGoulburnRiverformostofits length.Theseiconictreeshavebeenknownto reach 45metresandliveformorethan500years.Thetrees needperiodsoffloodingand cansurviveinundation formonths.Theirseedsarewashedontohighergroundduringafloodandgerminateandgrowbeforethenextfloodreachesthem.Hollowsandbrokenbranchesprovidenestingforgalahs,cockatoos,cockatielsandvariousparrots,whilefallenbranches providehabitatforotheranimals.

TheYortaYorta peoplehave alongassociationwith theLowerGoulburnNationalPark.Scarredtrees,mounds,stoneartefactscattersandmiddensaresomeofthesitesofsignificancethat canbefoundin thispark,particularlyalongthelowerreachesoftheriver.Theparkcontainsover196registeredAboriginal archaeologicalsites.
TheYortaYortapeoplehavehadlong-heldaspirations tobe involvedincaringforcountryandhaveanactiveroleinthemanagementofLowerGoulburnNational Park.Traditionalownerknowledgeassistswith managementofthelandandrecognisestheuniquerelationshipofthetraditionalownerstotheland.
Plantsandanimals
TheRiver RedGumforests and YellowandGreyBox woodlandsbetweenSheppartonandtheMurrayRiverarenotableintermsofsize,lackofdisturbance,diversity and botanical ‘intactness’.
TheRiverRedGumforestwithareasofgrassyand shrubbyunderstory,plusthelargenumberof wetlands,billabongsprovideshabitatforanumberof significantfaunaspeciesincludingBrush-tailedPhascogales,BarkingOwls,RoyalSpoonbills andMusk Ducks.
AreascontainingtreehollowsandmatureSilverWattlecontainhabitatofnationalsignificancefortherareSquirrelGlider.
FloraspeciesofnoteincludetheendangeredGreyBilly-buttons,SmallScurf-peasandJerichoWiregrass.
ReedySwamp,northofShepparton,whenfilled,isa havenforwaterbirdsincludingtheGlossyIbisandtheRoyal Spoonbill.
UnlikemanyVictorianrivers,theGoulburnRiverbelowSheppartonremainslargelyundisturbed. InstreamdebrisandlargesnagsprovidevaluablehabitatforMurrayCodandotherfishspecies.
