The Wife of Baths Tale
“When we are thought dependable, discreet and secret firm of purpose and controlled never betraying things that we are told.” In “The Wife of Baths Tale” Chaucer uses language, imagery, and structure to give us a better insight into the Chaucer period.
Chaucer uses language to give us a better in sight. “He stood not silent like a beast or post but gave his answer with the ringing word”. This shows an example of the fear he has when talking to the queen.
“Her heart was all on fire and, as a bitters, bumbles in the mire she whispered to the water…o water with thy sound”. He showed how they were back then. He uses it to help us understand how they feel. The imagery helped them imagine the story.
“If you will let me speak but still I hope the company wont reprove me though I should speak as a fantasy may move me, and please don’t be offended at my views they really only offered to amuse.” It shows the order in which the story is written. The story was too graphic for the time period. The author has used this quote as a structure to make the people aware of what’s to come.
In the story Chaucer uses imagery to help the readers understand how it was back during that time. Chaucer uses language to show the mood of the story, and to show us how they talked back in his period. Chaucer uses order to show the readers what’s coming next and to prepare them for what is to come.
