Twenty-fourthSunday

in Ordinary Time

Exodus 32:7-11, 13-14; 1Timothy 1:12-17;

Luke 15:1-32 [132C]

I am grateful to him who has strengthened me, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he considered me trustworthy in appointing me to the ministry… Indeed, the grace of our Lord has been abundant, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus… I was mercifully treated, so that in me, as the foremost, Christ Jesus might display all his patience as an example.”

The fifteenth chapter of Luke’s gospel is called the chapter of mercy. Forgiveness, repentance and joy over finding the lost sheep, lost coin and lost son reflect the Lord’s concern for all of us. Before presuming the outcome, consider the sadness and disappointment experienced with these losses. Why abandon ninety nine in search of one? Wasn’t the coin of relatively little value? Is the moral reflective about the selfish son, the jealous brother or the anxious Father?

Maybe we can find an answer in Paul’s testimony to his son Timothy. Aware of total forgiveness for his former way of life, Paul is engaged in serving His God. His ministry we reserved especially for him, no one else. God’s generosity was abundant, recalling John’s words “I came so you may have life and life in abundance.” Filled with grace and enthusiasm Paul proclaims his faith, grateful for the patience of the Lord in dealing with him.

God’s mercy is directed to me as well. By baptism I have been called to some ministry. His grace is great, even amazing. My faith and love are genuine and need to be shared with others. The gospel of mercy must be brought to others who may feel separated or alienated from Christ. I am the one He calls to bring His message with new ardor, new enthusiasm and new expressions.

May the cry of our ancestors be heard and live ‘Lord have mercy.’

HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly

Dear Parishioners,
Please join us the weekend of September 25th to hear Rev. C. Gregory Jones, C.S.V. speak at all the services about a ministry providing direct relief to the poor throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.
Fr. Jones will share what he has witnessed about Food For the Poor’s mission to care for the destitute as a means of living out the Gospel mandate to love one another.
Fr. Greg was ordained for the Clerics of St. Viator in 1996. Before preaching for Food For the Poor, he served as Pastoral Associate, a Scripture Instructor at St. Viator High School, and as the Director of Campus Ministry at OhioDominicanUniversity.
Please join me in welcoming Father Jones.
John P. McGuire, O.P.

The Academy of St. Joseph now has 53 students enrolled with 4 to come in the new year. We have more than doubled our enrollment from last year. We look forward to sharing many Masses and special events with you throughout the year.
We want to thank the St. Joseph’s community, especially Fr. McGuire, for your prayers throughout the summer.
In remembering the tragedies of September 11th, the students and the staff of the Academy send our thoughts and prayers to the families with lost ones. It is especially disheartening as so many of the victims were from Greenwich Village.
