The Watsons go to Birmingham-1963 Final Project Directions:

Choose 3 of the following choices-

Option 1- Create a skit

Choose your favorite chapter from the book. Write the script for a short skit about this chapter. You will need to include dialogue. This can be a humorous or serious scene from the book. If you would like to act your scene for the class, you can have classmates perform with you. It cannot be longer than a 3-5 minute performance.

Option 2- Diorama

Create a shoebox diorama of your favorite scene from the book. You can use materials from home or supplies from class to create the scene.You will need to include a 1-2 paragraph description of what part of the book you are recreating.

Option 3- Create a Soundtrack

Create a soundtrack that includes at least 5 songs. Explain why you chose each song to go along with the book The Watsons Go to Birmingham. Does it describe a character? A scene? A conflict? Write 3-4 sentences for each song you choose.

Option 4- Create a model

Create a model of a significant object in the book. You can use any material to create the model, including legos. Write 4-5 sentences explaining what you chose to create and why it is important to the story.

Option 5- Create a Chapter Comic Book

Pick your favorite chapter from the book. Create a comic book strip including important parts of the plot, characters a dialogue.

Option 6- Theme Poster

Create a poster outlining all of the themes for the book. Explain each theme using evidence/details from the text and describe why it is important. (2-3 sentences for each theme). Minimum of 5 themes.

Option 7- Write a response as a character

Choose one of the following prompts. Your response should be 300-400 words typed.

1.You are Byron. After seeing how gullible your brother and sister are, you decide to try your stories on another victim. Create a larger than life legend you plan to tell to unsuspecting children embellishing the story of the Wool Pooh.

2.You are Kenny. You are sick and tired of getting teased at school. Write a letter to the principal describing the bullying that is going on in the school and how you feel it should be stopped.

3.You are Byron. You have just returned from Alabama a changed person. Write Grandma Sands a letter expressing your feelings about how you have changed and why.

Option 8- Paper Bag Character

This assignment has several components:

  • On the front panel of your paper bag, draw a picture of your character. You may wish to draw the picture on another piece of paper and then glue it onto the bag.
  • On one side panel, describe the setting and historical context of the novel.
  • On the other side panel, write about how other characters in the text react and interact with your character. Don’t forget to use supporting evidence from the text.
  • On the back panel, explain how your character changed throughout the text. What was your character like at the beginning of the text? At the end? Why did your character change? Include supporting evidence from the text.
  • Inside your bag, include 10 items that you would associate with your character. Be prepared to explain your choices.

Option 9- 1963 Project Board

Create a 1963 project board featuring information for topics such as popular songs, TV shows, movies, cars and technology, fashions, news stories, and the social issues of the time period. For each picture, make sure to include a caption that is 4-5 sentences.
