WELCOME TO UPTON PYNE AND COWLEY

The Villages would like to welcome you to this Parish.

COWLEY is a small hamlet on the Exeter side of the A377 and is situated looking towards Exeter with fine views of the River Exe.

UPTON PYNE is a small unspoilt village on the north slope of the wooded clump of Pynes Hill. The churchyard looks north to the hills of Raddon, Cadbury, and Christ Cross, over a placid countryside of fertile red sandstone. It has been said that at any time of the year this is one of the most satisfying views in all Devon. This piece of country between Pynes Hill and Raddon must have been open in the Bronze Age, as four barrows of that period are found in it, three near Stevenstone Farm and one at No Man's Cross.

Upton Pyne is a very rural community, with two working farms set in the middle of the village.

This is a lively community and there are plenty of opportunities for involvement by every age group.

We are lucky enough to have an active church in both villages:

CHURCH OF OUR LADY, UPTON PYNE
There is historical evidence of the existence of a church in Upton Pyne in 1264, but its exact whereabouts is uncertain. The present church was consecrated on 26th September 1328 by Bishop Grandisson, the last of the great bishops responsible for the rebuilding of Exeter Cathedral.
ST ANTONY CHURCH, COWLEY
Actually, the Chapel of St Antony in Egypt – a desert hermit of the 4th century – designed by Rhode Hawkins, built in 1867 and consecrated in May 1868. Its site had been given in 1866 by the daughters of Joseph Shepherd, the then owner of Cowley Place.

PARISH COUNCIL
The Parish Council meets monthly at 7,30pm on the second Monday of the month in the Village Hall

The Council consists of five Councillors from Upton Pyne and three from Cowley. Members of the general public are welcome to attend any Council meetings.

In 1960 the Village residents raised money in order to build the current Village Hall. It has recently been upgraded and for the disabled, has full access, a loo and a hearing aid loop. There is a fully functional kitchen, and a central heating system. The Hall has many village events held at it and it is available for private hire at a cost of £8.00 per hour.

Yoga, Whist evenings and Line Dancing are among many of the publicly-run events in the Hall.

There is a large car park for use by patrons of the Village hall.

SOCIAL CLUB
The Upton Pyne Social Club is the oldest working man’s club in the country. It is now open, every evening except Wednesday evenings, to one-and-all with a membership charge of £2 per year.

Art Club
The Club is run by Pat Brookes, Tel: 841202 and Ros Rowlerson, Tel: 861205
The Club meets weekly on Thursday afternoons in Upton Pyne Village Hall from September to Easter.

Buses
Buses go daily (Monday— Friday) into Exeter, leaving Upton Pyne Post Box mid morning, returning from Exeter Bus Station at lunch time.

In Cowley, there is a bus stop outside and opposite Bernaville Nurseries with regular services to Exeter, Crediton and North Devon.

The Club meets on the third Monday of each month in Upton Pyne Village Hall. The Club organises outings and garden visits, a social evening and each year hold the very popular Village flower show.

Mobile Library
The mobile library visits Upton Pyne on alternate Tuesday mornings at 10.50am, outside the Village Hall.
Rubbish /Recycling is collected every Thursday morning.
