Swim Team Takes on Poplar Tree
The Villa Gorillas started the 2010 season with an exciting meet against the Pirates of Poplar Tree. In the end, the Pirates held off a valiant relay charge by the Gorillas, winning the last event in order to secure a 204-198 win.
The meet started out with the Pirates earning a 52-38 lead after the Freestyle event. The Gorillas were led by winners Macey Lynch, Ray Quinnette, Virginia Snider, Ryan Merrill, and a 1-2 sweep of the boys 15-18 event by Marcus Martinez and Travis Lauri. The freestyle event produced season best times from Jessica Bachelder, Ryan Blackwell, Neddie Byron, Shannon Cosgrove, Thomas Cronin, Connor Cuviello, Devin Cuviello, Charlotte Elliot, Travis Lauri, Sally Marrazzo, Regan Merrill, Ray Morrogh, Katie Quinnette, Ray Quinnette, Tara Rohlfing, Lauren Snider, Virginia Snider, Aileen Towner, Nathan Watson and Katie Whitcomb.
The two teams stayed pretty even during the Backstroke event with the Pirates retaining a 98-82 edge. Leading the way for the Gorillas in the Backstroke event were winners Tatum Lynch, David Davis, Matthew Martinez and Patrick Johnson. The backstroke event also had a great number of season best swims by Stephen Albert, Jade Berman, Alyssa Brennan, David Davis, Zoe Davis, Patrick Johnson, Macey Lynch, Tatum Lynch, Matthew Martinez, Matthew Naka, Harry Oldfield, Eduardo Perez, Ben Robertson, Meg Robertson, Tara Rohlfing, Meredith Turner, Colin Wakeman, Katie Watson and Nathan Watson.
The Gorillas began their comeback in the Breaststroke Event, trimming the Pirates lead down to 139-131. Top scorers for the Villa were Neddie Byron, a 1-2 sweep by Julia Koczot and Shannon Cosgrove and two 1-2-3 sweeps of the 11-12 Boys event by Harry Oldfield, Stephen Albert and Ray Quinnette and the 13-14 Boys event by Matthew Martinez, Colin Wakeman and Ray Morrogh. Season best times in the Breaststroke were recorded by Stephen Albert, Jessica Bachelder, Amanda Blackwell, Ashley Blanchard, Neddie Byron, Michael Cosgrove, Shannon Cosgrove, Patrick Johnson, David Joslyn, Natalia Joslyn (despite fighting off a fever), Julia Koczot, Tatum Lynch, Matthew Martinez, Connor McAlevy, Rory McAlevy, Ray Morrogh, Adeline Muras, Elizabeth Naka, Jeremy Naka, Harry Oldfield, Ray Quinnette, Virginia Snider and Colin Wakeman.
The Pirates answered back in the Butterfly Event, extending their lead to 179-163 despite winning efforts from Ryan Merrill, Meg Robertson, Katie Quinnette and a sweep of the Boys 15-18 Event by Travis Lauri, Eduardo Perez and Michael Cosgrove. Posting season best butterfly times were Ryan Bachelder, Kayla Byron, Michael Cosgrove, Connor Johnson, Natalia Joslyn, Travis Lauri, Brendan McAlevy, Ryan Merrill, Jeremy Naka, Eduardo Perez, Bridget Pitkin, Katie Quinnette, Meg Robertson and Katie Whitcomb.
The Gorillas had some ground to make up going into the relays, needing to win 8 of the 12 relays in order to win the meet. The Gorillas knew with a history of relay excellence, they were still right in the meet. The Pirates came out quickly in the relays, winning both 8 and under and 9/10 relays. With their backs against the wall, the Gorillas would respond with 7 straight relay victories. The 11/12 boys team of Stephen Albert, Ray Quinnette, Harry Oldfield and Nathan Watson started the run with a full second victory over the Pirates. That win was followed by victories by the 11/12 girls team (Jade Berman, Virginia Snider, Katie Whitcomb and Katie Watson), the 13/14 boys team (Brendan McAlevy, Matthew Martinez, Connor Johnson and Ryan Merrill), the 13/14 girls team (Olivia Cummings, Neddie Byron, Meg Robertson and Jessica Bachelder), the 15/18 boys team (Patrick Johnson, Michael Cosgrove, Travis Lauri and Marcus Martinez), and the 15/18 girls team (Shannon Cosgrove, Julia Koczot, Katie Quinnette and Megan Green).
The meet would come down to the mixed age relays. The boys team of Harry Oldfield, Jeremy Naka, Matthew Martinez and Travis Lauri delivered a win and made the score 199-198 going into the last relay. Despite a great race from Virginia Snider, Macey Lynch, Meg Robertson and Megan Green, the Pirate girls proved too much as they edged the Gorillas in the race and in the meet.
The Gorillas will build on this weeks close and exciting meet next Saturday when they travel to Highland Park.

Gorilla Appreciation
Thanks to all the volunteers who have helped in the past couple of weeks get the season off and running. From Amy Cuviello, who coordinates the volunteers, to Erin Quinnette and Gina Byron who have updated the snack bar and provided great service at Saturday’s meet, to Jean Naka who is now running the developmental meets on Mondays to Vicki Johnson who is putting together this first newsletter, to Betsy Green and Andrea Rasmussen who have organized great fundraiser dinners and put on a great pancake breakfast on the first day of practice. The Villa Gorilla swim team would not exist without these great volunteers.
An extra special thanks goes out to those who have stepped in at the last minute for others at the meets: Pete Naka, Jeff White, Kristy Mattey, and Deb Dorneman. And thanks to all those who have offered. We have a great group a volunteers!
