3. Questions Comments by LAPS and UNM-LA Board Members and Visitors:
a. Bill Hargraves: Can LAHS students take their classes during the summer? Yes. Associate degrees will require it. How would you evaluate how the students are doing or improving? Course completion, degree completion, high school graduation rate, grades, and attendance. Is there enough enrollment to make a separate academy? The committee would like to visit other institutions that are similar to our demographics and situation.
b. Matt Williams: What are the number of students in the program? Agrees with freeing up afternoon blocks
c. David Sutton: In cases where there is high dual credit enrollment (in a given class), can an LAHS teacher teach the course? They will need to meet the minimum qualifications according to UNM standards.
d. Andrea Cunningham: Do you have a proposed “go” date for these programs? The committee is building it one at a time, serving those who are already in the program. So they are starting with EMS. Start date: Spring 2017 (January). How will it be introduced to the LAMS and advisement? The committee is currently talking with LAMS and getting the word out. Ms. Cunningham suggests appointing a “go-to” person that people can talk to. She was concerned that students are not given an AP grade for taking college courses. Dr. Rooney suggests that we are clear on expectations when students take college courses. Brad Parker said that the high school would consider moving to a 5.0 scale.
e. Stephen Boerigter: This seems to be a good marriage of PED and HED. Students face a huge transition from high school to college. He sees this as a good shift and is excited about the program.
f. Jim Hall: Stated his appreciation for the efforts of all the committee members. If a student takes a Calculus course at UNMLA, they would not get credit at the high school level? Not usually because it depends on the qualifications of the instructor who would need a PED credential. He sees LAECCA serving 3 different kinds of students: Those who want an early start on college; those who want to start preparing for employment right after high school; and those who want to take courses not found at LAHS. He states that the financial support is important because an increased headcount is not helping raise more money. He points out that if there is a possibility that it can become an actual school, it can be a candidate for small state funding…maybe a long-term goal.
g. Bernadette Lauritzen (parent): She suggests that the LAECCA Committee set up a meeting with all involved parents to clear up the confusion and questions they have about the program.
