The University of Manitoba has issued a call for proposals from faculties for Canada Research Chairs. The College/Department of [XX], Faculty/School of [XX], University of Manitoba is accepting proposals for applications and nominations for a Tier [XX]Canada Research Chair(CRC), established by the government of Canada to enable Canadian universities to foster research excellence ( The research focus of this prestigious position is[proposed chair area/name]. With this Chair, the College/Department of [XX],Faculty /School of [XX] intends to build on the University of Manitoba strategic priority of [XX] and further enhance the University of Manitoba’s [signature area/research theme/cross-cutting theme] in the research area of [XX]. Nomination Selection and Assessment

The College/Department of [XX] CRC Nomination Selection Committee will review and provide feedback on the proposals for CRC nomination and make recommendations on which proposals/applicants to put forward for consideration by the Faculty/School of [XX] and University of Manitoba.

Assessment Criteria:

A Tier 1 CRC candidate should be a Full Professor or an Associate Professor who is expected to be promoted to the full professor level within one or two years of the nomination, and will:

  • be recognized as an outstanding and innovative world-class research leader whose accomplishmentshave made a positive impact in the field;
  • have a superior record of obtaining competitive external research funding and attracting andsupervising graduate students and postdoctoral fellows;
  • as chairholder, be expected to develop collaborative programs of research involving faculty,graduate students, postdoctoral fellows from across the entire University andfrom outside the University of Manitoba;
  • be proposing an original, innovative research program of the highest quality; and
  • demonstratestrong alignment with the Strategic Priorities of the University of Manitoba.

OR

A Tier 2 CRC candidate should be an Assistant or an Associate professor, and will:

  • be recognized as an excellent emerging scholar in the field for fewer than 10 years at the time of nomination [NOTE: for candidates who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree, and where career breaks exist, such as maternity, parental or extended sick leaves, clinical training, etc. may also be considered as eligible - as assessed through the CRC’s Tier 2 justification process.]
  • have demonstrated the potential to achieve international recognition in their fields in the next five to ten years;
  • have the potential to attract, develop and retain excellent trainees, students and future researchers;
  • be proposing an original innovative research program of high quality; and
  • demonstrate strong alignment with the Strategic Priorities of the University of Manitoba

Following the internal CRC selection review, successful proposals will be sent to the [Faculty/School/College/Department of XX] which will then rank order all CRC proposals. The final rank order of proposals for nomination and applications for CRC will be sent to the Office of the Vice- President (Research and International) where final decisions with respect to the CRC nominations will be made by the President’s Executive Team.
