The UK FintechRoadshow to Vietnam

BackgroundAs Vietnam’s growth has been transforming this country of 90m people (31% adults banked), the financial services sector offers new opportunities for UK companies. Majorreform and modernisation processes plus increased foreign investment, including from the UK, continues to evolve this sector. The five year banking reform will conclude in 2015 with some six (more) mergers that the central bank believes the consolidating would make the banking sector healthier.
Banking sector plays a critical role in the Vietnam’s growingeconomy – GDP doubled in the last 12 years. Vietnam’s economy has shifted away from being “cash-based” to“cash-less and fast growing” i.e. number of bank cards increased significantly from 21m in 2009 to 68m in 2013;internet penetration up to 43% in 2014; 1.45 mobile subscription per every Vietnamese; mobile internet penetration reached 34% by 2014; e-commerce/m-commerceexpected to be booming in the next three years (valued $300m in 2011 and estimated $2.5bn by end of 2015).
Following the UK Prime Minister’s visit to Vietnam in July where he participated in aFintech roundtable, this first time Roadshowin Vietnam will enhance the UK’s offer in financial technology to Vietnamese bankers and executives/technical officers from insurance and security companies. Participating companies will meet directly with approx 50 potential buyers and partners in Vietnam who have a strong interest in the newest technology and financial applications. In response to the underwayreforms and M&A, increasing demand for compliance and transparency is creating a need for better reporting and risk management. Technology for tackling cyber fraud would also be of great interest of the Vietnamese banks.UKTI Vietnam’s close relationship with both the regulators and businesses will guaranteestrong engagement from the Vietnamese side.
