Hey parents!

I hope this message is finding you well! Here is your math class update from Mr. Maupin for the week of 9-12-16:

This week went by really fast with the holiday off and CBA testing, but I wanted to fill you in on what has happened this week, what I'm seeing in class, and what is to come next week as well!

The students have been GREAT,behavior and personality wise!

I'm starting to see some misconceptions here and there from the work we've been doing and would like to share with you! The most common thing I'm seeing is that some of the students are not reading the questions fully on word problems. They are reading them, but as soon as they think they know what is being asked of them, they are skipping right to the math instead of finishing the problem. Also, decimal placement and place value has been a problem for some throughout that lesson. We are going to correct this by using more word problems in class. Vocabulary and reading for comprehension have become key due to the STAAR testing!

Students took their first exam of the year today in CBA #1! Passing percentages weren't great, but definitely show promise! The first test of the year is always hard for a couple reasons: Students are getting back into the swing of testing, some may be bad test takers (like I was), and it's hard to gauge the performance of your child based off of one test due to the 60/40 grade weight. If your child isn't passing for the first progress report, it most likely isn't that they are missing work or not doing good work, or that they didn't try. I have communicated with students that were missing work and gave them the opportunity to make it up. If they didn't, it did hurt their grade a little. For the most part, all students got all of their work in and I am overall pleased with them for that! They've really started off on the right foot!

Next week we move into 7.4B/D! We will be working with proportions and unit rates, and we will be on those teks for probably the next few weeks.

Thanks to all the parents that came out to parent night Wednesday! It was great to meet all of you and know we are going to have a great year working together to help your student be successful!

I will wrap up by saying again, the kids are AWESOME! They are all so capable of success and I will do everything that I can to make sure that they achieve it! If you have any questions or concerns at all, please get in touch will me! Have a blessed week!
