Why John on this topic?

John Hotowka is a Bradford boy ‘done’ good, but don’t hold the fact he comes from Bradford against him. He cannot count among his achievements winning an Olympic gold medal, or climbing the south face of Mount Everest in a pedalo but he has run a successful one man business all on his lonesome since June 1989.

As he travelled the globe speaking and entertaining at corporate events he experienced the highs and lowsof keeping himself motivated and at the top of his game.

Even through a crisis of confidence and doubt in his abilities in 2002, somehow he kept going, where did he find the strength? This observant, inspiring and very funny presentation teaches us how he overcame the odds of failure.

Why do organisations book John?

Because he’s funny - the audience laughs

If they’re laughing - they’re engaged

If they’re engaged - they’re listening

If they’re listening - they’re focused on what’s being said

If they’re focussed on what’s been said - his message gets through ...

…and when his message gets through - ACTION IS TAKEN! = IMPROVED BOTTOM LINE

What’s more his speaking approach has proven to be highly effective as heappeals to all the learning styles.

He’s often used as:

  • The first presentation of the day to ‘set the mood’ of the event
  • The after lunch presentation to energise the delegates. This is John’s favourite slot
  • The climax of the conference to leave the delegates on a high
  • After dinner

John Hotowka – A bit about the man

John is a fellow of the Professional Speaking Association and a member of the Magic Circle. He’s been entertaining and speaking to corporate audiences since 1989 and has an uncanny knack of simplifying a complex message and communicating it with comedy, stories and magic.

His parents were honest and proud working class immigrants and after making many sacrifices managed to send him to grammar school. Next stop BradfordCollege to study dispensing optics. It was there he took up magic. Why? To meet girls! Unfortunately it didn’t work but little did he know how big a part magic would play in his life. It wasn’t long before the magic bug bit deep and when he left college to work as a dispensing optician, performing magic was always close to his heart.

For eight years he was an optician by day and magician by night- performing close up magic to the diners in the restaurants of his home town Bradford. He was one of the first close-up magicians to perform restaurant magic in Europe. Having been made redundant from optics three times in the space of eight years, he decided to take up magic full-time and become a corporate magician.

Since 1989 he’s travelled the world from Manchester to Milan, Derby to Dubai, Hull to Hamburg and from York to New York performing his magic at corporate events, product launches and exhibitions - selling his clients’ products and services.

Now he’s a sought after speaker on the corporate circuit, working with the likes of Price Waterhouse Coopers, Hallmark Cards and Initial Specialist Services, to name but a few. He’s also a popular speaker in education helping young people develop entrepreneurial and life skills.

Throughout his career he’s learnt a lot as he’s faced many celebrations and challenges keeping his business thriving and keeping himself motivated through the highs and lows of this joyride which is called “life”.

Client feedback

“The feedback suggests that you delivered the various messages we hoped you would, so we now have a more motivated sales force who will get creative and broaden as well as strengthen their network of contacts. Your mix of entertainment and business was just right for our audience, and especially well received and listened to at the ever demanding difficult after lunch slot.”

W R Ashcroft, Managing Director, Belzona Polymerics Ltd

“And deliver you did… The background information you researched from David and I left the audience feeling you understood our industry and issues. Thanks largely to your professionalism, both as a speaker/entertainer and businessman, the after-dinner speech set the tone for the following days programme perfectly, making the whole event look thoroughly thought through and joined-up.”

Nick P Atkins, Director, Proven Track Record Ltd

“Your confident, reassuring and friendly style won the audience over very early on and feedback from them afterwards was without exception positive. From my own point of view, I was delighted that you were able to get over all the messages we had discussed in the briefing meeting and hopefully this will influence our members in their management and leadership roles for many years to come.”
David Dearnley, Immediate Past President – Co-operative Funeral Services Management Association

“I was delighted with your presentation, which got our delegates on their feet, in a positive frame of mind and motivated – ready for the rest of the day. Our audience thoroughly enjoyed your presentation and I know already that some of them have approached you for future events of their own.”

Philip Marsh, UK Health and Safety Manager, British Glass Manufacturers’ Confederation
