The Story of Zacchaeus

1.

Zacchaeus is a really nasty, little man,

He loves to cheat folk, whenever he can,

Working for Rome he gathers money

He makes people cry – he ‘aint’ very funny.

2

Collecting taxes, is what he does best,

He gives some to the Romans, and keeps the rest.

It’s made him rich; he’s got lots in the bank,

For this it’s the poor, he has to thank.

3

Everyone hates, this little man Zac,

He’d better be careful, watch his back.

He’s really greedy; he takes more than he should,

Some people would kill him, if they could.

4.

Zac sat down for breakfast, a hard boiled egg,

He chatted with his wife and scratched his head.

“That man Jesus, is in town today,

I might go and watch, as he passes my way.”

5

“He talks of love and setting men free

It doesn’t sound like, the talk for me!

He sounds like a ‘crackpot’, out of his mind,

Giving up money and being really kind.”

6

Zac followed the crowd, but could not see.

He was really small, only five foot three.

He pushed people and jumped up and down,

Passers by gave him, a quizzical frown.

7

“I want to see Jesus, who sets men free,”

He scrambled up a sycamore tree

He got a good view he could see a long way

Then suddenly Jesus was coming his way

8

Jesus and his followers walked slowly by

He waved at Jesus and caught his eye

“Come down,” said Jesus,“and chat to me.”

Zacchaeus scurried out of his tree

9

“Your leading a life, that’s not very good,

You don’t treat others, the way that you should.

Look after people, care for your fellow man,

Help the human race, do what you can.”

10

The words Jesus spoke, touched Zac’s heart,

He’d change his ways – Have a new start.

“Come to my house and have some lunch,

You can bring your friends, bring the whole bunch.”

11

They ate scrambled egg and drank red wine,

Everyone had a really great time.

Zac’s and his wife served up, a hot goat stew,

We’re really proud, this is our gift to you.

12

Ordinary folk asked,”Why’s he eating with him?

His really unpleasant he’s riddled with sin.”

The man’s unclean; he should be cast out,

They got really angry and began to shout.

11

Jesus calmed the crowd and began to speak,

He ruffled his hair and got to his feet.

I’ve come for everyone, the whole human race,

The holiness and goodness, shone from his face.

12

Zac changed his life and gave back to the poor,

The sick and lonely, all passed through his door.

He gave his fortune, to the heal the sick,

The words of Jesus, had done the trick.
