Re: New York State Driver & Traffic Safety Education: New York State Department of Motor Vehicles published curricular support videos and Teen Electronic Event Notification Service (TEENS)

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has recently produced a series of educational teen driver videos. The video series entitled "iDriveSmart" was filmed at the Shaker High School campus and is featured on the DMV's Younger Driver Web site (http://www.nysdmv.com/youngerdriver/) via the “Check Out Our Teen Driver Videos” link. The videos focus on topics including speed, distracted driving, inexperience and the use of seat belts. The videos are housed on You Tube servers, which are commonly blocked via school Web based security systems. In the event that your school does not permit access to You Tube, these videos have been made available on the New York State Education Department Web site located at the following address: http://www.forms2.nysed.gov/videos/home.cfm?cat=DriverEd&list=0 as well.

The New York State DMV has also developed enhancements to the Teen Electronic Event Notification Service or TEENS. TEENS is a voluntary free service offered by the DMV that notifies the parent or guardian of a minor, under the age of 18, in the event that a conviction, suspension, revocation or accident appears on the minor's driver's license record. For information on this service, please go to http://www.nysdmv.com/youngerdriver/teensProgram.htm.

A press release announcing these two DMV services, is located at the following Web address: http://nysdmv.com/press/pr102010.htm.

Tips & Tricks: Driver & Traffic Safety Education memos will now feature a new section entitled Tips & Tricks, where the DTSE team will highlight common issues related to forms, guidelines, tools, etc. This month’s tip addressed amendment form DE-1A.

Did you know that sections I and IX must be filled out every time an amendment is submitted for approval? Section I encompasses general information and section IX is used for original (blue ink) administrative signatures. If an amendment form is submitted that updates one or more pieces of information (as per your program’s Course Approval Notification and Check List (CAN) letter) is missing section I and/or IX, the form will be sent back to your program labeled “Not Approved”. Please refer to the directions in the gray box posted at the top of amendment form DE-1A located here: http://www.p12.nysed.gov/cte/de/forms.html.
