THE SON OF GOD IN HUMAN FLESH
Matthew 1:18-25
INTRODUCTION:God has only one unique Son. He gave His Son to be the Savior of sinners. As the Son of God, Jesus entered this world by physical birth. The differenceabout His birth was the fact that His mother was a virgin and His father was the Holy Spirit. Therefore, He is the holy Son of God. The incarnation of the Son in human flesh is essential to the gospel message.
I. NAMING OF THE SON
A. HEAVENLY NAME. “shall call His name JESUS” (Matt. 1:21; Luke2:21)
B. HONORED NAME. Phil. 2:9-11
“Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
Phil. 2:9-11
II. NATURE OF THE SON
A. NATURE AS THE SON OF GOD.
1. Eternal existence as Son of God. John 1:1-2; 8:58
2. Exalted position as the Son of God. Heb. 1:3
As the Son of God, Jesus possessed the same characteristics and attributes as the Heavenly Father. The term Son of God declares His deity and His uniqueness. Son of God is a reference to Jesus being the promised Messiah of the Old Testament.
B. NATURE AS THE SON OF MAN.
As the Son of Man, Jesus took upon Himself flesh and blood. In every way Jesus was a man, but unique, in that He was sinless. We can say today there is a God Man in heaven, Jesus Christ the Lord. Isaiah 9:6 speaks to the divine and human nature of Christ, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given.”
III. NATIVITY OF THE SON
A. SIGN OF HIS BIRTH. Isa. 7:14
“Therefore the Lord Himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son.”
B. SUPERNATURAL IN HIS BIRTH.
1. Seed of woman. Gen. 3:15; Gal. 4:4
“But when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth His Son, made of a woman, made under the law.” Gal. 4:4
2. Fathered by the Holy Spirit. Luke 1:34-35
C. SIGNIFICANCE OF HIS BIRTH.
1. Attestedto His deity. Isa. 9:6-7; 2 Tim. 3:16
2. Authenticated His humanity.Luke 2:6-7
3. Affirmed the Scripture. Matt. 1:22-23
IV. NECESSITY OF THE SON
A. REVEAL THE FATHER. John 1:18; 14:9
B. REDEEM THE SINNER. Matt. 1:21
C. RULE OVER NEW CREATION. Luke 1:32-33
“He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto Him the throne of His father David: And He shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of His kingdom there shall be no end.” Luke 1:32-33
LESSONS FOR LIFE:
1. The incarnation of Jesus Christ is essential to the gospel message. As man,Jesus died. As God, He arose and ascended back to His throne in heaven.
2. Jesus was God and Man. In His incarnation, Jesus put aside His glory, but not His deity. His flesh was a veil covering His divine glory. On the Mount of Transfiguration, Jesus revealed for a moment His glory.
3. Jesus understands us because He is the Son of Man. Jesus can save us because He is the Son of God. Have you trusted Him to save you?
