The shemittah release, the land sabbath and Deu-15-1-to-3

Introduction
The article initially started as a simple word study on the Hebrew word shemittah (#H8059) which is initially found in Deuteronomy chapter 15. It initially sparked my interest for a couple of reasons, the first was the relative uniqueness of the word [1] and the other reason was because of my passion for Torah Equity.[2] When I read the words… release, lendeth, creditor, “debtor” (by implication the creditors neighbour or brother) … I knew there was something there to investigate. All of these words are right in the “sweet spot” of Torah Equity.

Deuteronomy 15:1-3 – The initial verses in question
15:1 At the end of every seven years thou shalt make a release. 2 And this is the manner of the release: Every creditor that lendeth ought unto his neighbour shall release it; he shall not exact it of his neighbour, or of his brother; because it is called the LORD'S release, 3 Of a foreigner thou mayest exact it again: but that which is thine with thy brother thine hand shall release;
Deuteronomy 14:29 – The Previous Verse for Context
14:29 And the Levite, (because he hath no part nor inheritance with thee,) and the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, which are within thy gates, shall come, and shall eat and be satisfied; that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all the work of thine hand which thou doest.

The verse prior to Deu 15:1-3 is (obviously) the last verse of the previous chapter (Deu 14:29) this is important because going back a few verses gives the reader context which is always good. I contend this because the topic is what James calls “pure religion”[3]and is a key goal of Torah Equity which is to have every righteous individual gain access to their talents so as to finance their micro private welfare system for the benefits of the Children of Israel who are in your midst.
This verse is talking about a most important term and condition of the covenant we have with YHVH thy Elohim (KJV “the LORD thy God”). Each individual Israelite is to be the welfare provider (which is done on the private side) and to not delegate this authority to others (the modern day welfare system which is done on the public side). Quidpro quo (something for something else) is a necessary element of a contract.
By the Israelite performing the act of being a private welfare provider and taking on the responsibility as the trustee of those talents (quid), then he should have the expectation (quo) that YHVH will bless him. This leads us into Deu 15:1-3 where a more specific element of the T & C’s of the contract/covenant is mentioned namely the laws on SheMiTaH (release) are articulated. Before we go there let’s do a quick word study.
Shemittah Word Study
I want to key in on a couple of Hebrew words sehemittah and they are…
- H8058 is comprised of the letters Sheen Mem Tet SheMiT;
- This word is also in Deu 15:2-3 and the only other place it’s mentioned in the Torah is Exo 23:11
- H8059 is comprised of the letters Sheen Mem Tet Hey SheMiTaH.; see Deu 15:1-2, 9, 31:10 (only places in the bible).
- the only place in the whole bible where this verse is found is in this chapter Deu 15:1-2, 9, 31:10 which are listed above

Comment
The strategy of Jack Smith (which I contend is biblical) is to initially take a full acceptance of the charge being made against your strawman. If that is your habit then the charge of having an evil eye can not be made by others and therefore cannot be presented to our heavenly father for adjudication. This is true of course if your performing the shemittah.
Deu 31:9-13 - Moses delivers the law unto the priests to be read in the seventh year
And Moses wrote this law, and delivered it unto the priests the sons of Levi, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and unto all the elders of Israel. 10 And Moses commanded them, saying, At the end of every seven years, in the solemnity of the year of release (HaSheMiTaH) H8059, in the feast of tabernacles, 11 When all Israel is come to appear before the LORD thy God in the place which he shall choose, thou shalt read this law before all Israel in their hearing. 12 Gather the people together, men, and women, and children, and thy stranger that is within thy gates, that they may hear, and that they may learn, and fear the LORD your God, and observe to do all the words of this law: 13 And that their children, which have not known any thing, may hear, and learn to fear the LORD your God, as long as ye live in the land whither ye go over Jordan to possess it. 15:2 And this is the manner[5] of the (HaSheMiTaH) releaseH8059: Every creditor[6] that lendeth[7]ought unto his neighbour shall release (ShaMoT) H8058it; he shall not exact it of his neighbour, or of his brother; because it is called the LORD'S (SheMiTaH) release.H8059
the manner: This is debar (H1697) which means words. Can we think of this as being a written document of words that describe the debt and the we, as the accommodating party, can indorse thereby releasing the debt.
YHVH’s release: If we are to release the poor of their debt which shall never last for more seven years, then the question how to we do that? We look in our accounting books i.e. our books and records and formally release the debt. Maybe we indorse the charging instrument we have against our poor brother. We do this because were told to but also because it’s done in similar way by the one who we are indebted to names YHVH. It seems reasonable to me that if we do what were suppose to do to the poor then in his accounting book (the book of life?) we will act accordingly i.e. he will release our debt. If you will this is a double accounting.
15:3 Of a foreigner thou mayest exact it again: but that which is thine with thy brother thine hand (ThaSh-MeT) shall release;H8058
foreigner: If I’m arguing against the public welfare state am I arguing for completely defunding the federal government? But the size of the federal government would be radically smaller if we individually took responsibility of t he welfare state and made it private. So some federal government would be necessary and it’s funded by foreigners.

The Laws for the year of rest – Exo 23:10-11
10 And six years thou shalt sow thy land, and shalt gather in the fruits thereof: 11 But the seventh year thou shalt let it rest (ThiShaMoTeNaH) H8058 and lie still; that the poor of thy people may eat: and what they leave the beasts of the field shall eat. In like manner thou shalt deal with thy vineyard, and with thy oliveyard. (Exo 23:10-11 KJV)

The context is about the land Sabbath. Assuming Israel would keep the land Sabbath (a habit they were keen not to keep) then during this period, the poor (H34 ebyon) would be able to glean whatever the land naturally produced. Just like

I like the connection between ancient Israel and America…my ears always perk up to that kind of talk.
The book relies heavily on Isa 9:10

It emphasis the judgment of YHVH against Israel for her pugnaciousness of doing it wrong[8]. But what is it exactly that she is doing wrong? If you are going to make your argument based on the word namely shemittah then one needs to ask what is the context of this word. This article is all about just that and the context seems clear to me it’s about the land Sabbath and the poor. It’s about how we, per our covenant with YHVH, are suppose to deal with both the poor and the land (in this case they are connected). Deu 15:1-3 isn’t the only place that talks about how we are to deal with the poor but it (shemittah) does, in every case, does clearly relate to the poor.

ְשִׁמָטּה
šemiṭṭāh: A feminine noun meaning a remission, a release, a suspension. This word signifies the cancellation of a debt that was owed to another person. This was a debt which a person would, under ordinary circumstances, be obligated to pay back. In Israel, at the end of every seven years, the people were to release and forgive their fellow people from debts owed to them. This word was used in this context of the seventh year to show that the debtor was released from any obligation to pay back what had been loaned to him before that time (Deu_15:1-2, Deu_15:9; Deu_31:10). In the Old Testament, this noun was used only in the context of forgiving debts at the end of every seven years.

šāmaṭ: A verb meaning to throw down, to cancel, to release; to stumble; to let fall. It indicates letting the land lie free, untilled (Exo_23:11). It is used in its absolute participial form as a command, shall release, will release (a debt) (Deu_15:2). It means to knock something over, e.g., the ark (2Sa_6:6; 1Ch_13:9). It is used of tossing something down (2Ki_9:33); in a figurative sense, it means removed from power (Psa_141:6). It indicates letting go of something, losing it. In context Israel loses her inheritance from the Lord, gives it up under force (Jer_17:4).

By securitizing our birth right via the birth certificate / strawman trust, have we not in effect discontinued our heritage i.e. inheritance? Discontinue means no long continue with, therefore is Jeremiah saying that are covenant with YHVH is no more? Can we say that we got a “New Deal” that’s better than and replaces that Old Deal?

Although a land Sabbath is implied in Deu 15, and for which is described in Lev 25:4, the word Shemittah is not used but rather H7677 shabbathon.
