“Unkind cutting back” is a “micro-traumatic” way of relating in which one person in a significant relationship withdraws, but only partially, from the other. The individual withdrawn from is made to feel insecure, deprived, and/or betrayed by the other’s unilateral, unexpected retreat. The problem is compounded by a subtle proscription against naming and exploring the act’s hurtful elements. Dr. Crastnopol will focus on cutbacks in the frequency of sessions within the analytic relationship, a move that is often instigated by one member and resisted by the other. The analytic challenge is to avoid being thrown off course by the narcissistic strains associated with the bid to cutback, and to learn how to harness the ensuing exploration for maximal therapeutic advantage.
Following Dr. Crastnopol’s presentation of her paper, Jo Hoffman M.D. will present aspects of an analysis that was ultimately successfully terminated, after repeated struggles around “unkind cutting back”.
Presenters
Margaret Crastnopol (Peggy), Ph.D. is supervisor of psychotherapy and faculty, William Alanson White Institute of Psychiatry, Psychoanalysis and Psychology in New York City. She is also faculty, Seattle Psychoanalytic Society and Institute (SPSI), associate editor,Psychoanalytic Dialogues, and on the editorial board ofContemporary Psychoanalysis. Dr. Crastnopol was a founding member of the board of directors of the International Association for Relational Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy. She writes and teaches nationally and internationally about the analyst's and patient's subjectivity, vicissitudes of love/lust/attachment, and varieties of "micro-trauma." She is in private practice for the treatment of individuals and couples in Seattle, WA.
Jo Hoffman, M.D., FRCPC is a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist in private practice in Langley, British Columbia. She is on the SPSI Faculty, having graduated in 2012. She is also on the faculty of the Department of Psychiatry, University of British Columbia.
Cecile R. Bassen, M.D. is in private practice in Seattle. She is a Training and Consulting Analyst at SPSI and at NPS, and is chair of SPSI’s Continuing Education Committee. She is also on the faculty of the Dept. of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Washington.

Learning Objectives: After attending this session, the learner will be able to:
1. Describe subtle signs of self-withdrawal and its impact on the analytic dyad, whether it occurs in the analyst or the patient.
2. Articulate strategies for reducing the injury inflicted by unconscious tendencies to attenuate attachment in the psychotherapeutic relationship.
3. Differentiate among diverse motivations behind “cutting back” and to explain the consequences of each for the ongoing treatment, and/or the termination phase.
