If you travel around the world, you will learn that every country has different customs. It is what makes travelling so interesting! If you visit Thailand in April, you will see the Songkran celebrations – and you might get very wet! Songkran is the Thai New Year, and it is traditional to throw buckets of water at passers-by on the street! If you did that in London, you might get arrested!

Different countries have different laws, so you have to be careful. Of course, stealing and murder are illegal everywhere, but some laws are surprising. In England, if you buy a stamp with the Queen’s head on it, you must make sure you stick it on your letter the right way up. It is illegal to stick the stamp on a letter upside-down. It shows that you do not respect the Queen.

Many laws in England were made centuries ago. As time passes, they are not important any more, but they have not been changed. For example, did you know that it is illegal to wear a top hat in the city of London? And in the seventeenth century Oliver Cromwell banned eating mince pies on Christmas Day. Mince pies are a traditional Christmas treat, so millions of people in the UK break that law every Christmas. There are hundreds of laws like this, which seem stupid to us now. Since 1965 over 2,000 old laws have been changed, but there are thousands more – so be careful!

1 Songkran is an annual festival in Thailand. _____

2 You mustn’t use stamps with the Queen’s head on them. _____

3 Some laws are old-fashioned and out-of-date. _____

4 Many people commit a crime at Christmas. _____

5 All the silly laws have been changed. _____

News reader: Good evening, and welcome to the ten o’clock news. Here are the latest news stories.

Scientists studying an active volcano in northern Iceland say that there might be an eruption any day now. People living near the mountain have been warned, and many people have left their homes. If the volcano erupts, thousands of homes in the area could be destroyed, and hot rocks from the volcano might start a forest fire, which would cause even greater destruction.

Police are investigating a series of crimes in the city this week. Over twenty residents in central Birmingham reported that their cars had been stolen on Tuesday night. The joyriders drove around the city, playing loud music and breaking the speed limit. One witness saw five cars having a race on her street and phoned the police. She said that the drivers were young men, but she couldn’t see their faces. The police have questioned several suspects and hope that the criminals will be arrested soon.

Finally, in response to the terrible flood last month in Scotland, students at our local high school have organised a sponsored run to raise money for the flood appeal. The organisers hope that thousands of pounds will be raised. The money will be used to buy clothes and food for people who lost their possessions in the flood. If you have time, go along tomorrow and support them. You needn’t take part, but you can sponsor someone, donate money or just cheer the runners at the finish line. Your support will be appreciated.
