Agenda Item / Discussion / Action/Outcome1.
Promotion and Tenure
-Ad Hoc DPCs
-Reminders / · Departments have difficulty constituting DPCs due to limited eligible tenured and senior faculty.
· This year, there will be one basic science ad hoc DPC and one clinical ad hoc DPC with members serving staggered terms for consistency of membership.
· Ad hoc DPCs conduct promotion and tenure application reviews and probationary faculty annual evaluations.
· Faculty in a director type of position that is not officially recognized by the BOR may participate on a DPC.
· Funding for salary increases that come with promotions must be supported by the department. Departments must make sure they have enough funds in their budget. There is no extra funding provided by the school for these salary increases. Promotion funding does not have to be G-funds; tenured funding needs have G-funds in reserve available.
· Support letters: unsolicited letters carry more weight than solicited letters.
2.
Implementation of New Policies
-Conflict of Interest
-Teaching Load
-Limited Tenure / · Conflict of Interest Policies - previously distributed by Dr. Roy
Magnusson (Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs) for review and
approval at next general faculty meeting.
· Teaching Load Policy – distributed by Dr. Richard Kasuya
(Associate Dean for Medical Education) for review and approval.
· Limited Tenure document currently with Manoa general counsel
and with Chancellor for review and approval.
3.
Other Issues / Dr. Tam brought up the topic of Professional Leave. It has been noted that professional leave must be approved by the Department Chair, otherwise it needs to be taken as Leave Without Pay (LWOP).
Ms. Uyehara reminded everyone that if Chairs, faculty, or staff in your department have any problems that it should be reported to JABSOM HR as soon as possible so that there is documentation of the issue/concern and then the proper handling of the issue can be taken care of. Do not wait to resolve the problem.
Next Meeting / Wednesday, January 19, 2010 (9:00-10:30am), (location TBD)
