GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The purpose of this syllabus is to focus on the development of a nursing advisement relationship between a preceptor and preceptee. As your preceptor, I will guide you towards discovering, planning, and achieving academic and professional success throughout your college experience. Within the context of our advisement relationship, I will assist you in becoming academically and professionally engaged as a self-directed learner with competent decision-making skills. Through a variety of required courses at Stockton, you will be prepared to fulfill the academic and professional requirements needed to be successful in nursing.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

As a result of our advising sessions, the preceptee should be able to:

Ø  Utilize the Pre-licensure Advisement and Policy Guide.

Ø  Recognize the importance of General Study Requirements in

building a foundation for professional growth and development.

Ø  Access and interpret the information on an online degree audit (CAPP).

Ø  Develop effective study and time management skills.

Ø  Utilize available college and program resources to enhance academic success.

Ø  Develop a portfolio and resume in preparation for job interviews.

Ø  Explore various areas of interest in nursing.

Ø  Obtain a successful outcome on the NCLEX licensure examination.

PRECEPTOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Ø  Effectively communicate college policies and nursing program guidelines.

Ø  Provide a supportive and encouraging environment.

Ø  Assist in the development of a program of study.

Ø  Facilitate professional growth and development.

Ø  Provide referrals to appropriate resources on campus.

Ø  Maintain confidentiality

PRECEPTEE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Ø  Review academic policies in the Undergraduate Bulletin and nursing program requirements in the Pre-licensure Advisement and Policy Guide.

Ø  Actively participate in developing and planning professional career goals.

v  Be prepared for appointments.

v  Identify individual interests to assist in course selection

v  Develop an educational plan following the recommended sequential course guidelines.

Ø  Communicate academic progress throughout each semester.

Ø  Explore extracurricular activities and diverse learning experiences.

Ø  Take responsibility for the development and implementation of your educational plan

Notify your Preceptee :

Ø  Change of name, address, phone number, or E-Mail address

Ø  Change in course schedule (drop or adds)

Ø  Withdrawal from a course or a program

Ø  Below passing grades in any quizzes, exams, assignments or clinical requirements

PROGRAM PRECEPTORS:

The transfer student (with 16 or more credits awarded) is usually assigned to a faculty member of the program in which the student plans to major. Program preceptors are specialists in their respective academic fields and advise students about graduation requirements, career and graduate school opportunities and special interests. (Refer to the student handbook)

PRECEPTOR SELECTION:

Preceptor assignments are administered by the Center for Academic Advising. Any request to change preceptors must be made to the Director of Academic Advising on a “Program Declaration/Change of Preceptor” form available in that office. (Refer to the student handbook)

REGISTRATION NOTIFICATION:

Registration for the Fall semester typically takes place in mid-March and early April

Registration for the Spring semester typically takes place in mid-October/November.

It is imperative that you make an appointment with your preceptor to review your academic progress and eligibility to register for future nursing courses.

STANDARDS OF ACADEMIC PROGESS

The college’s policy regarding Standards of Academic Progress is fully defined in \ Refer to Undergraduate Bulletin, pp. 35 – 40.

DEGREES AND CREDIT HOURS

Richard Stockton College offers 37 degrees in 27 Bachelor of Science degrees. Most courses at the College are four credits; however, some program requirements necessitate other models.

In order to graduate, a student must earn a minimum of 128 credits. In order to graduate in four academic years, or eight semesters, the student must average 16 credit hours per semester.
