Your 1st Quarter Discussion Groups will be explaining the religion of SSHS. While this is meant to be lighthearted and specialized to high school students, please also remember that religion is something that is incredibly personal and important to people and deserves respect. Please create a religion by answering the following questions/completing the following tasks. Prepare a short summary of your religion addressing the following for Ms. Erickson (yes, on paper to be turned in) and be prepared to share your religion with the class (in 2 min.). Consider the values, morals, beliefs and attitudes of the people that we have studied lately as you consider what our school’s students may also consider important. YOU HAVE 20 MINUTES TO PREPARE.

  1. Explain the ideological foundations of this religion. In other words, how/when/why did it get started? What prompted its beginnings?
  1. Who founded the religion and who are some important figures in the religion, both past and present?
  1. Is this religion monotheistic or polytheistic? Why?
  1. What are the important religious texts for this religion? Where did they come from? What do they include?
  1. What different branches have formed within this religion? What lead to these divisions?
  1. What sort of religious festivals and practices are evident? What role do they play to the followers?
  1. In what ways do the religious beliefs of the people affecttheir daily lives?
  1. What controversies is this religion facing in present society? Why is there controversy? How is this religion dealing with it?
  1. What symbol or imagery accurately represents this religion? Please be prepared to share this with the class.
