INTRODUCTION
The primary responsibility of Animal Ethics Committees (AECs) is to ensure that the use of animals for research and teaching activities at the University is conducted in compliance with the Australian code for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes. The role of the Category A (Veterinarian) Member is to provide a valuable perspective on applications put to the AEC for ethical review, including but not limited to the appropriate use of anaesthetics and analgesics, and the effects of experimental manipulations on the health and welfare of animals.

2.Availability
AEC members must be able to commit time to pre-read and review applications prior to each meeting, and attend the Committee meetings. The AECs meet a minimum of 11 times per year– the exact time and duration of the meeting depends upon the Committee. Will you be available for this time commitment and meeting schedule?

Please note that Category A (Veterinarian) AEC Members must possess qualifications in veterinary science that are recognised for registration as a veterinary surgeon in Australia.

Essential
-Experience relevant to the activities of The University of Melbourne. Veterinarians who lack this experience must familiarise themselves with the biology and clinical characteristics of the species of animals used.
Desirable
-Previous experience with animals in a research or teaching environment.
-A good understanding of issues relevant to experimental design and the scientific method.
