11.1 Research Trial Recruitment by Site 2015/16
1.Introduction
The Peninsula Urology Network Site Specific Group (NSSG) has been re-established, not having met for several years due to a national cut-back in network support. Peninsula Cancer Network Manager and Administrative Support have been funded for an initial year by the South West Strategic Clinical Network (SWSCN) and a bid for future funding submitted to participating trusts.
Despite the large geographical area covered by the NSSG, the group works very well together and is setting up a strong clinical focus. Members are keen to share the outcomes of good practice and local developments which will enable the group to develop effective clinical pathways of care.

3.Network Group Membership (14-1C-102g)
The Urology NSSG membership is comprised of clinicians, nurses and diagnostic staff representing the MDTs at the above organisations together with nominated user representatives.
4.Terms of Reference (14-1C-102g)
The Urology NSSG Terms of Reference were adopted by the members present at the meeting held 22nd April 2015. Mr Robert Mason, Consultant Urological Surgeon, agreed to take on the role of Chair for the next three years. The final document has been posted on the network website:
5.Meetings(14-1C-103g)
The first meeting of the new NSSG was held on 22nd April 2015 and attended by a wide representation of clinical and diagnostic members. A further meeting was held on18thNovember 2015. This was a full day meeting with break-out sessions to review current patient pathways in line with the new NICE Guidelines. The 2016 meetings are scheduled for 12th May and 19th October.

6.ClinicalGuidelines (14-1C-106g, 14-1C-107g, 14-1C-108g, 14-1C-109g)
In order to achieve the best outcomes, the NSSG decided at the November 2015 meeting to review the NICE Guideline requirements then approach the CCGs to explain what is required and ask how it will be funded. Commissioners will be invited to attend the next meeting.
7.Pathways(14-1C-111g, 14-1C-112g, 14-1C-113g, 14-1C-114g)
A full day pathway workshop was held on 18th November 2015. Members divided into two groups, prostate and bladder. The outcomes from each group Rob Mason and Nick Burns-Cox. A further meeting will be arranged for early 2016 to review the kidney pathway. It was agreed that the regionally defined pathways for both penile and testes would be adopted.
8.Audit(14-1C-117g)
Brachytherapy Implants - A review of brachytherapy implants was led by the Consultant Clinical Oncologist, Anna Lydon. Data available from the national prostate cancer audit will be used to baseline the audit.
Time to Treatment –A retrospective audit over the 2014 calendar year will be carried out on ‘Time from GP Referral to TURBT, from TURBT to Definitive Treatment for muscle invasive bladder cancer’. This will be led by Mark Mantle and MohiniVarughese.
9.Patient Representation (14-1C-116g)
Two user representatives have been invited to join the NSSG membership. David Rundle, a South Devon patient, attended the November 2015 meeting.
10.Living With and Beyond Cancer(14-1C-116g)
The ‘Living With and Beyond Cancer’ programme, sponsored by Macmillan Cancer Support, was devised to improve outcomes for patients and support practitioners in taking the actions necessary to drive improved cancer outcomes whilst reducing the numbers of follow-up appointments.
Support centres have been/are being established:
- PHT base is the ‘Mustard Tree’ with 2/3 project staff providing therapies, teaching programmes and study days
- RDEFT runs Health & Well-Being clinics at ‘FORCE’. Patients are referred as proper clinic appointments, when appropriate
- RCT currently building ‘The Cove’ centre to offer support and promote self-management to those with cancer, their families and carers.
- SD held its 2nd Health & Well-Being event across all tumour sites.
- TST provides ‘Moving On’ clinic run by Macmillan Nurses.
11.Research and Clinical Trials (14-1C-118g)
The group discuss recruitment into clinical trials at each NSSG meeting, a report highlighting the current and proposed recruitment status of each MDT is prepared jointly by the Peninsula Cancer Research Network Delivery Manager and the Sub-Specialty Lead and presented to the group.
