The Partnership Series
An Oklahoma Educational Perspective on Alcohol and Other Drug Use
This series of four alcohol and drug education workshops will be held regionally for individuals who provide substance abuse, mental health, and domestic violence services. The training will be appropriate for newly oriented staff as well as those with substantial professional experience. The series will better prepare professionals to work with individuals with a substance abuse diagnosis or with co-occurring disorders of substance abuse and mental illness.
Section A: La Cultura Cura: Cultural Competency for Addictions and Prevention Counselors Working with the Growing Latino Population
Learning Objectives
Participants completing Section A shall be able to:
- Describe the increase of cultural competency awareness.
- Recognize direct service skills for the Latino population.
- Restate the effective strategies for working with the growing local Latino population.

Faculty
Patricia Chavez Anaya is the Executive Director of Esperanza del Pueblo Community Services. She has devoted her career to the betterment of families and youth through program development, education, research, prevention, and intervention. Ms. Chavez Anaya has extensive experience and expertise in the behavioral health field including substance abuse prevention and treatment having worked in a variety of capacities for over twenty years. She has significant experience in developing, implementing and evaluating programs specifically aimed at the Latino community. She has served as a consultant/trainer for numerous Latino projects and initiatives as well.

Section B: Trauma and Recovery for Addictions Counselors
Learning Objectives
Participants completing Section B shall be able to:
- Recognize the differences between Trauma Memory and Normal Memory processes.
- Describe the role of trauma and PTSD in Chemical Dependency relapse.
- Identify when trauma is a necessary part of the recovery plan and how to integrate chemical dependency recovery and trauma recovery.
- Restate the fundamental elements needed for trauma stabilization and recovery.
- Describe the role of the drug and alcohol counselor in trauma stabilization and recovery.
- Explain how involvement in a 12-step recovery program aids trauma stabilization and recovery.

Faculty
Dr. Joe Westerheide is the Director of Mental Health Services at A Chance to Change Foundation in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He specializes in chemical dependency and mental health issues. In addition, Dr. Westerheide provides training to professionals in Gestalt Therapy, Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP), Ericksonian Hypnosis, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) and Therapeutic Metaphors.

- Demonstrate effective communication skills when discussing primary prevention and early identification.
- Develop an action plan to integrate prevention into counseling practice.

Section D: The Twelve Core Functions of the Drug and Alcohol Counselor
Learning Objectives
Participants completing Section D shall be able to:
- Describe how screening, intake, orientation and assessment blend together to provide the counselor with information to develop a treatment plan.
- Prepare counselors with knowledge of how to use treatment plan as their road map to providing competent services to their client.
- Describe how to link counseling modalities to maximize the client’s treatment.
- Recognize how referral and consultation assists in providing a holistic environment for the client’s recovery.

Faculty
Rhonda Cochran is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor. She is also certified by the IC&RC as an Oral Test Evaluator for the certification of new alcohol and drug counselors. Rhonda is currently a DUI Instructor, an adjunct professor at NortheasternStateUniversity – School of Social Work, and the Regional Clinic Director at Cherokee Nation in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.

Series Details
Registration and Fees
If pre-registering by mail: Current ODMHSAS staff members or ODMHSAS retirees are admitted at no charge. A $50 per section fee applies to all other participants if they register at least one week prior to the workshop date. A reduced rate of $150 is available for individuals who register and pre-pay for all four sections by November 2, 2004. Each section is limited to 40 participants, so register early to ensure your reservation.
Late or on-site registrations: A $75 fee per section applies to all paying participants who register or pay on-site and to all whose registration is postmarked less than one week prior to the workshop date.
Registration fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. Payment may be made by check, money order, or purchase order made payable to ODAPCA, FEI #73-1280423.
Continuing Education Credits
The ODMHSAS Institute for Mental Health and Substance Abuse Education and Training has applied for six credit hours for each section through ODAPCA, the Oklahoma State Board of Licensed Social Workers, and the Licensed Professional Counselors Committee. Credit hours have been approved by the Oklahoma Board of Examiners of Psychologists.
How to Receive Your Certificate of Attendance
Certificates of attendance will be distributed at the end of each workshop. If you have an emergency and are unable to complete the workshop, you may pick up a certificate before you leave which will reflect the actual hours you were in attendance. Certificates of attendance will not be mailed.
