The “Out of This World Presentations”

(Lesson 5)

Mr. Bouwman’s Fourth Grade Class

Michigan Standards:

Fourth Grade Science Standards:

Solar System, Galaxy, and Universe (ES) V.4 (Click to view)

  1. All students will compare and contrast our planet and sun to other planets and solar systems.

- Compare and contrast characteristics of the sun, moon, and earth.

  1. All students will describe and explain how objects in the solar system move.

- Describe the motion of the earth around the sun, and the moon around the earth.

Michigan Educational Technology Standard(s):

Grades 3 - 5 (Click to view)

  1. Use a variety of technology tools to promote creativity.
  2. Identify how different forms of media and formats may be used to share similar information, depending on the target audience.
  3. Know how to use basic input/output devices and other peripherals (projector).

Learning Objective:The students will present his/her selected planet’s pamphlet and poster utilizing a digital camera projector. Students in the audience must take notes on each presentation. Additional information will be added to the KWL chart started in lesson 1.

The Lesson:

1.The teacher will model how to properly use the digital camera projector. The teacher will show the students how to properly take notes during a presentation.

2.Students will individually present his/her selected planet’s pamphlet and poster utilizing the digital camera projector to provide a visual aid to the audience. The students in the audience are responsible for writing down five facts from each presentation.

  1. Students will add additional information to his/her KWL Chart.
  2. The teacher will collect the students’ notes and KWL Chart.

* This lesson has been designed to have students actively use a projector to present information. It is important for the teacher to model how to use a digital camera projector. The students must also know how to take notes and actively listen in order to be prepared for a lengthy session of presentations. This lesson will be conducted in Mr. Bouwman’s classroom utilizing a digital camera projector. This lesson’s designed to be taught solely by the teacher. Volunteers are not necessary.

Benefits of Using Technology:

  1. How will technology be used to enhance or improve the learning process?

-This lesson is an excellent opportunity for students to become acclimated with using projectors. Students need to know how to use projectors for future presentations.

  1. What does the technology allow you to do (or possibly do more effectively) that you couldn’t otherwise do?

-Using a digital camera projector makes it easier for the audience to see the presenting student’s projects. Rather than passing the project around the room and/or holding the project up for everyone to see, the audience is provided with a clear visual representation. This will help the audience better understand the concept.

  1. How does the technology change the instructional process for you as a teacher?

-In this lesson, the teacher takes on the role of observer while the students take on the role of teacher. In my opinion, students often become motivated when asked to explain concepts in front of the class, thus the overall quality of work increases.

Assessment:

  1. How will you assess student learning in this lesson?

-Following the lesson, the teacher will once again collect the students’ KWL charts and notes. The teacher will assess the charts, checking to see if students added “Want to Learn” and “Learned” information to the KWL chart. The teacher will also grade the students’ notes, checking that students recorded five facts per every presentation. Grades can be assigned based upon the teacher’s discretion.

  1. How will you know that your learning objective was met?

-I believe that the learning objective of this lesson is met based upon the quantity and quality of information submitted by the students on their KWL charts and notes. The goal of this lesson is to share the students’ projects and learned information during the course of this unit.

The “Out of This World Presentations”- Reflection

Lesson Description:

This lesson is designed to have students actively use a projector to present information. Students will present his/her selected planet’s poster and pamphlet using a lumens projector. Students in the audience will record notes based on each presentation. Additional information will be added to each student’s KWL chart.

Learning Objective:

The students will present his/her selected planet’s pamphlet and poster utilizing a digital camera projector. Students in the audience must take notes on each presentation. Additional information will be added to the KWL chart started in lesson 1.

I feel the objective of this lesson was met. Each student actively presented information based on his/her selected planet utilizing a digital camera projector. The students added additional information to his/her KWL chart that was started in lesson 1.

Lesson Highlights:

The students enjoyed using the digital camera projector (lumens) to present his/her information to the class. I believe that the students were actively engaged while presenting information in front of the classroom, and while actively listening and recording notes from the audience. The students were able to see each group’s poster and pamphlet projected on a screen in front of the room. Additional information was added to each student’s already “jam-packed with information” KWL chart. Several students rehearsed his/her presentation before hand, and were able to answer questions from the audience following his/her speech. I believe that this was an excellent way to finish my “Out of This World” unit.

As an educator, I am comfortable utilizing various projectors to make presentations. I enjoy using my building’s lumens projector when presenting new concepts.

Benefits of Technology:

This lesson was an excellent opportunity to help students become acclimated with using projectors. I believe that students become motivated when allowed to use projectors in front of the class to explain concepts, thus the overall quality of work increases. Using a digital camera projector makes it easier for the audience to see the presenting student’s projects. Rather than passing the project around the room and/or holding the project up for everyone to see, the audience is provided with a clear visual representation. This will help the audience better understand the concept. I believe that it is important that students know how to use projectors for future presentations.

Student Evaluation:

The students were graded based on the number of facts he/she added to the “Learned” section of his/her KWL chart. The students were also graded based upon key scientific vocabulary discussed during his/her presentation.

Ideas for Improvement:

Looking back, I believe that I could combine this lesson with my previously taught podcasting lesson. The “Out of This World” podcast could have been recorded during the presentation, rather than meeting with students one by one. This would save time, thus allowing the teacher to incorporate additional science lessons that utilize technology. Another area to improve upon is the note taking process. The teacher could use the digital projector ahead of time to model how to properly take notes. This will help eliminate the number of questions asked about taking notes and/or having to stop presentations to show the note taking process. Finally, rehearsal is key. Students who rehearsed ahead of time appeared more comfortable in front of class than students who did not rehearse.
