Dear Parents,

Your child is about to begin an oral history project. This is an integrated project which includes reading, writing, interviewing, & communication skills. The project will span approximately 6 months and contains 3 written components and a presentation board.

The Oral History Project

Getting started: Select a person of interest 60 years of age or older in fair health that your child has access to in person. It is best to pick someone who lives close by as your child will need to conduct several interviews throughout the course of this project.

The Components

  1. The Portrait:

Students need to take a picture of the featured person in a close-up, front pose. Picture then needs to be enlarged to an 8x10 portrait (vertical) presentation. Samples will be shown in class. See samples below.

  1. The Artifact Report:

An artifact is any man-made object that holds personal value to the owner. This can be something as simple as a postcard to a treasured family heirloom. Students need to write a report about the artifact answering several questions. These questions will be provided to the student in writing.

Ex. When and where did the person get the artifact? Why is it so special? Report must also include a full description of the item. Pictures or sketches of the artifact will be needed later in the project. NO ORIGINAL ARTIFACT SHOULD BE BROUGHT TO SCHOOL!

  1. The Memoir:

This is a short memorable story which is important in the person’s life. Keep in mind that it is a one-time memory of a specific event or moment. Most adults have that special story from their childhood they enjoy telling. Students need to retell the story in the 1st person. Memoir should be given a title. Paper needs to be formatted as directed and explained in class.

Ex. “Marie’s First Broken Bone” “ADay at the Circus”

  1. The Biography:

This is a retelling of the person’s life focusing on biographical information as well as highlights which capture their personality. Students will receive several handouts with suggestions for gathering information during interviews, structuring the writing and much more. This paper is generally 3-4 pages in length.

Each component will be discussed and modeled in class. Appropriate time frames will be provided for each. It is important to use time frames provided to ensure completion on time and to minimize last minute stress. At the conclusion of this project students will create a tri-board displaying the 4 components with some creative items and designs that showcase their honored guests. We will hold an evening exhibition in early May. More details will follow as the date draws near.

Thank you,

Ms. Fairburn
