The Office of the Inspector General for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (Office) is the oldest state-level inspector general’s office in the nation. The Office has a broad mandate to prevent and detect fraud, waste and abuse in the expenditure of public funds. In keeping with this mandate, the Office investigates allegations of fraud, waste and abuse at all levels of government; reviews programs and practices in state and local agencies to identify systemic vulnerabilities and opportunities for improvement; and provides assistance to the public and private sectors to help prevent fraud, waste and abuse in government spending.Please see our website ( for more information.
The Office seeks a policy analyst to work in its Policy and Government Division. The policy analyst willidentify and analyze opportunities to save state, local and federal funds; conduct public policy research;and review and develop comments on legislation. Specific responsibilities include:
- Assisting the Office to meet its legislative mandates, including reviewing public construction projects, methods and practices, and public real property transactions.
- Assisting with the development and implementation of project plans.
- Performing research on a variety of topics related to legislation, reviews and other projects.
- Writing research memoranda, public reports and other documents.
- Interviewing public employees and other parties.
- Evaluating and interpreting data obtained in the course of reviews and other projects.
- Reviewing legislation and drafting legislative recommendations.
- Interacting with legislative committees.
- Additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree.
- At least oneyear of government-related work experience, preferably workingin a Massachusetts state agency.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze, understand and explain complex public policy issues.
- Excellent analytical and research skills.
- Strong verbal and interpersonal skills.
- Outstanding written communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects at one time.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced degree and/or substantial experience in one or more of the following areas: public administration, finance, construction, real estate, energy, lawor economics.
- Advanced computer or data analysis skills.
- Knowledge of Massachusetts public construction and/or real property laws.
- Experience reviewing and drafting legislation.
- Direct work experience in a state agency or the legislature.
