THE ODYSSEY POEM ASSIGNMENT

The Odyssey is an epic poem with a host of compelling characters. Write an original, 15-line poem in which you retell some part of The Odyssey from the point of view of ONE of the following female characters:

ATHENA, the goddess of wisdom who first punishes Odysseus then later comes to his aid

CALYPSO, the nymph who holds Odysseus captive on her island for 7 years

CIRCE, the witch who turns Odysseus’ men into pigs but later helps him return to Ithaca

ANTICLEIA, the mother of Odysseus who gives him news of home from the Underworld

PENELOPE, the wife of Odysseus who hasn’t seen her husband or had any peace in 20 years

Your poem must meet the following criteria:

·  First-person point of view from one of the characters listed above (no others)

·  At least 15 lines

·  Each line must be at least 3 words long

·  Number your lines

·  At least two epithets for your chosen character

o  Two epithets from the text OR one epithet from the text and one you create on your own

·  Underline your epithets

·  Choose a scenario/situation/story from The Odyssey that features your character and retell it from her point of view

o  What is her attitude towards the events? Share her thoughts, use dialogue

·  Use imagery to paint a picture for your reader: put them in the story with sensory details, references to specific places and people, etc.

·  Use repetition of words, phrases, epithets to add emphasis and align your work with the style of Ancient Greek epic poetry
