WHAT IS A DBA?
It’s a one-on-one test on the lessons, completed over-the-phone with your teacher.
TIPS FOR SUCCESS
-You cannot pass the DBA if you skim or skip the readings.
-You cannot pass the DBA if you don’t watch the in-lesson videos
-You cannot pass the DBA if you skip the in-lesson activities
REMEMBER
This test is nothing to worry about if you read the lessons, use these teacher notes (next page), add your own notes to them, and study before you call.
GOOD NOTES
Think about what you are learning. Write ideas in your own words.
BAD NOTES
Copy/paste lists and definitions directly from the Lessons into your notes, without fully understanding what they mean. You can use your notes on the test, but these will be open-ended discussion questions; you won’t be able to pass the test by reading me a sentence from your notes.
TO SUMMARIZE
Do the right thing; read the lessons like you are supposed to, and you will easily pass the DBA. If you try to cheat your way through the class without doing the work, you will not pass the DBA.
REMINDER
You must pass the DBA in order to pass the class. Even if you have a 100 A+ grade in the class, I am not allowed to issue your credit for the class until both DBAs have been passed.
PROCEDURE
No appointment needed for DBAs. Call any Mon-Fri 8am to 7pm; if I am on the other line, leave me a message and I will call you right back. Only one DBA attempt per day, so plan ahead.
Milestone 1, Lesson 1 - "Social Media: A Brief But Eventful History"
Make sure you know why you did the "Pop rocks and Soda" activity (what was the lesson behind it?), and get a general idea of how quickly the internet developed.
Milestone 1, Lesson 2 - "Certificate of Authenticity, Please"
Be sure you know why they sent you to that external website ("The Count"). Make sure you understand exactly what a digital footprint it, and who controls it (hint - NOT you).
Milestone 1, Lesson 3 - "The Internet: Who's the authority?"
Make sure you know how the Hybrid Cars activity related to bias/perspective, and why the Mommy Bloggers example relates to online reliability. Think about the Red Flags on how to spot fake news stories.
Milestone 1, Lesson 4 - "You heard what?"
Make sure you understand why they had you watch the "Lost in Translation" video, and how things can quickly go viral.
Milestone 2, Lesson 1 - "This is your life. This is your life on Social Media"
Understand what it means to "curate" our online identities, and be ready to revisit this topic in Milestone 2, Lesson 3.
Milestone 2, Lesson 2 - "What is your type?"
Understand how the online "you" might differ from the real world "you," and what you can do about it.
Milestone 2, Lesson 3 - "How is your Social Media psyche?"
Understand how selective sharing and curated identities are linked to social media induced loneliness and depression, and how to avoid it. Make sure to look at the link to the cyberbullying site on page 8 of this lesson.
Milestone 2, Lesson 4 - "Getting personal with Social Media"
Focus on all the positive aspects of Social Media, including the two in-lesson activities and the six minute Ichthyologist video.
Once you have finished reading Milestone 2, study and call your teacher for the 2.05 Discussion Based Assessments. You may use your notes during the DBA.
