Nelson Precythe Scholarship

  1. General Information

The Nelson Precythe Endowment Scholarship will be awarded annually to a North Duplin High School senior who plans to attend any institution of higher education to pursue their career goals. This scholarship is to help insure that a student who has excelled academically and who plans to attend college is provided recognition for their achievement. Applicants will be given precedence if they have been involved in sports or plan to pursue a profession in sports or agriculture.

The scholarship will be a one-time value of $5,000 ($1,250 per year for 4 consecutive years). Once the student has been selected for the scholarship, the student must complete the Scholarship Verification form and send a copy to the Education Foundation and the attending college. Upon receipt of notification of enrollment by the college or university, the payment will be made to the college or university and the student. Payment may be made prior to enrollment only if the college or university requires it.

Precythe scholarship funds that are awarded must be utilized within9 consecutive semesters from the scholarship award inception.

  1. Application Procedures:
  1. Any high school senior who meets the criteria may make application. Applications for the Nelson Precythe Endowment Scholarship may be obtained from the North Duplin High School principal or school counselor or online at
  1. The application must be completed in its entirety and returned to the principal or school counselor by the announced deadline.
  1. An applicant must have an SAT score of 950 or an ACT score of 20 and at least a 90 average.
  1. Rank in class, overall grades, participation in extra-curricular activities and community service will be a consideration.
  1. Two letters of recommendation must accompany the application when it is submitted. A relative may not submit a letter of recommendation.
  1. One letter should be from an individual who is not school connected.
  2. One letter should be from a teacher who taught the student during high school.
  1. Selection Procedures:
  1. The Duplin County Education Foundation Scholarship Committee will determine the scholarship finalists and they will be required to attend an interview.
  1. The Education Foundation Scholarship Committee will announce the finalist at the annual M. Austin Carter Awards Celebration. Student applicants are asked to be present at the celebration.

  • List all academic honors and extra-curricular/community activities separately by grade year (9th, 10th, 11th, 12th).
