The National Theatre of Scotland Creates Theatre That Excites and Entertains Audiences

The National Theatre of Scotland creates theatre that excites and entertains audiences and participants at home and beyond, and which makes Scotland proud.

Since our very first productions in 2006, everything we have aspired to challenges the notion of what theatre can achieve. Being a theatre without walls, we are free to make theatre wherever we can connect with an audience. As well as theatres, our work has been shown in airports and high-rises, forests and ferries, drill halls and football pitches, pubs and factories – we are truly a theatre without walls.

As Scotland’s national theatre, we exist to work collaboratively with the best companies and individuals, to produce and tour world-class theatre that is for the people, led by great performances, great writers and great stories.

We produce and present 12 to 15 new shows each year, as well as touring a repertoire of our most successful past productions. We have had considerable success on the Scottish, UK and international stage, including tours to North and South America, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, China and South Korea. Participatory, community and youth work, as well as collaborations with the formal education sector, form an integral part of our programme.

The National Theatre of Scotland has recently taken occupation of a new “engine room” for Scottish theatre, Rockvilla. While not a performance space, this converted building, on the banks of the Forth and Clyde Canal in Glasgow, brings together the many elements of the Company’s creative operations – technical, costume, rehearsal, workshops, outreach and administration. Rockvilla provides an exciting opportunity to share and develop work for and with theatre-makers and communities from all over Scotland.

The National Theatre of Scotland is a Company limited by guarantee and a registered charity. The Company is governed by a Board of Directors and run on a day to day basis by a Senior Management Team, led by the Artistic Director (Chief Executive) and Executive Producer (Deputy Chief Executive). We have a core staff of 51 and employ up to 300 production staff a year on fixed-term contracts, as well as engaging many creative freelancers throughout the year.

The Company’s total annual turnover ranges from £6m to £7.5 million, depending on the nature and scale of the programme, of which £4.3m is received as core funding from the Scottish Government.
