The National Federation of the Blind of New Hampshire

The NFB of NH offers 2 scholarships each year in memory of former members who generously gave money to further the education of blind and visually impaired students of NH. Floyd M. Callwardwas a member of the NH NFB in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s. He wanted to help blind students continue their education beyond high school. Theresa C. Herron was a former student of the PerkinsSchool for the Blind in Massachusetts. She was dedicated to helpingothers who were legally blind, especially the young, get a bettereducation so they could become self-supporting and independent.Ms. Herron was a member of the Governor'sCommission on Disability,volunteered much of her time to theNH Library for the Blind Physically Handicapped, and served asPresident of the NH NFBfrom 1982 to 1988.

Eligibility Rules

  • The $1,000 Floyd M. Callward Memorial Scholarship is open to any legally-blind resident of NH or a legally blind non-resident who is currently or will be studying in NH at the post-secondary level nextfall. No restrictions apply as to field of study.
  • The $500 Theresa C. Herron Memorial Scholarship is open to legally blind NH school students to pay for extra services or devices for successful study and achievement. Preference is given to students in grades K-12 as per Ms. Herron’s wishes, but post-secondary students are eligible, and Callward applicants will automatically be considered.

DEADLINE:Applications accepted September1st– January31steach year. All documents must be received or postmarkedno later than midnight of January 31st.

The Scholarship Committee reviews all applications and selects the winners, who will be notified as soon as possible. Winnersmust attend the entire NH State NFB Convention, where they will be interviewed. Scholarships will be awarded at the banquetdinner. Room, registration and banquet expenses will be paid by NFB of NH for the winners. The Convention is open to all interested persons and NFB members.

Required supporting documentation:

  1. A brief essay telling us about yourself: activities, interests, hobbies, personal goals, what you have done to deal with situations involving your blindness, how the scholarship will help (mention specific services or equipment).
  2. Two(2) letters of recommendationa letter from applicant’s TVI.
  3. Provide proof of legal blindness (i.e. letter from your primary care or eye doctor, or state agency stating that applicant is legally blind. (Medical details not needed.)
  4. Mail official transcripts (or report cards) for last 2 years and all post-secondary schools attended, if any,to coordinator address above. Transcripts may not be e-mailed
