The Music Department of the College of Saint Benedict/Saint John’s University is pleased to announce that The College of Saint Benedict will be the new host of the Upper Midwest String and Chamber Music Conference.

Formerly hosted by MankatoStateUniversity, the UMSCMC is a music camp for all string students in grades 7–12. The dates for the 2007 conference are July 22–27, 2007. There is no entrance audition and students are accepted in the orderin which they apply.

Sponsored by the Minnesota String Orchestra Teachers Association, the Upper Midwest String and Chamber Music Conference is ideal for 7th through 12th-grade students eager to develop their string playing through chamber music, string orchestra, and technique classes.The faculty of distinguished artist-teachers is aided by a corps of outstanding college student teaching interns, making possible considerable individual attention.

Days are filled with music and evenings are filled with a variety of student and faculty concerts and recreation activities.

Located in St. Joseph, Minnesota, The College of St. Benedict boasts a lovely campus situated between fields and woods. The facility includes the 1,000-seat BenedictaArtsCenter, air-conditioned residence halls, ample practice rooms, and a variety of activities.

Registration information for 2007 will be available on the internet ( in the spring and will be announced in the spring issue of String Notes. The deadline for student applications is usually mid-June.

FACULTY(2007)

Jennifer Arco: Youth Orchestra Conductor. Jen is the orchestra director at OwatonnaJunior High School and also directs the Cannon Valley Youth Orchestra in Northfield. In 2004 she was named Teacher of the Year in Owatonna. Her school orchestra has earned the Tier 2 honor in MNSOTA’s Middle School Orchestra Festival for the past 8 years. She is a regular faculty member of MNSOTA’s Fall String Camp.

J. David Arnott, DMA, holds degrees from the Curtis Institute of Music, the Philadelphia College of Performing Arts, and the University of Southern Mississippi. Currently serving as Orchestra Director and Assistant Professor of Music at The College of St. Benedict and St. John’sUniversity, Arnott is a member of Trio Benedicta, The Duluth-Superior Symphony, and music st. croix. Dr. Arnott has extensive experience both playing and conducting. He is the past-president of the Minnesota chapter of the American Viola Society and holds memberships in ASTA, The Conductors Guild, MENC, and the Minnesota Music Educators Association.

Faith Farr: cello. Faith teaches at MacPhailCenter for Music and her home studio. She is an active free-lance cellist and a founding member of the Minnesota Sinfonia. Her articles on string teaching have been widely published. She self-publishes Foundations for Music Reading, a theory curriculum for string players. Faith received the 1996 MNSOTA Master Teacher Award.

Sarah Hersh: violin. Sarah is Associate Professor of String Education and Director of the ASTA String Project at the State University of New York, Potsdam. She is a registered Teacher Trainer for the Suzuki Association of the Americans. Her Ph.D. in string education is from the University of Minnesota.

Mary Budd Horozaniecki: violin. Mary is a Lecturer in Music at CarletonCollege and also teaches at Augsburg and MacalesterColleges. She concertizes widely as violin soloist with orchestra and in recital. She was the recipient of the 1993 MNSOTA Master Teacher Award. Her mentors are Josef Gingold and Margaret Pardee.

Gerard Jones: Chamber Orchestra Conductor. Formerly a member of the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra, a member of the Lake Superior Chamber Orchestra, and the Director of Orchestras at DuluthEastHigh School for 18 years, Jerry is currently the Director of Orchestras at StillwaterAreaHigh School. Jerry received MNSOTA’s 1996 Orchestra Teacher of the Year award and has been included in the Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers from 1998 to present.

Mark Kausch: bass. Mark is a double bass graduate of St.OlafCollege in Northfield and the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore. He has performed on viola da gamba with the Hanover Band of London, the Smithsonian Chamber Orchestra, and locally, with the Lyra Concert and Ex Machina. He teaches double bass, viola da gamba and string pedagogy at BethelUniversity.

Karen Moon: Chamber Music Coordinator. Karen is a violinist and Core Teacher on the faculty at MacPhailCenter for Music. She created and directs the string program at City of Lakes Waldorf School and teaches at AscensionSchool. She is a member of the Civic Orchestra of Minneapolis and founder of Quartet Spiritoso. She is an honors graduate of AugsburgCollege, with a degree in violin performance.

Katherine Wolfe: violin and viola. Katie is Associate Professor of Violin at the University of Iowa. She previously taught violin, viola and chamber music at OklahomaStateUniversity and was Associate Concertmaster of the Oklahoma City Philharmonic. A Minnesota native, she is a graduate of IndianaUniversity and the Manhattan School of Music. She has concertized in North and South America, Europe and the Far East.
