The Famous Five

The Most Significant Contribution

Many of the rights we take for granted were not always granted equally to men and women. Did you know that until 1929 women were denied access to the Canadian Senate? Did you know that the word "persons" in the Constitution did not really include women? Several important rights in Canada arose because of the efforts of a group of women known as the Famous Five. Examine the following resources and think about the conditions that they tried to change. Read pages 258 – 263 in your Voices of Canada text and view the following links to become familiar with these important women and the impact they had on Canada.
