The Master Tailor

Genesis 3:20 & 21; Isaiah 61:10

Genesis 3:20 & 21 (NKJV)

20And Adam called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.

21Also for Adam and his wife the Lord God made tunics [KJV = coats] of skin, and clothed them.

Isaiah 61:10 (NKJV)

I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, My soul shall be joyful in my God; For He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness, As a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments, And as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

Introduction:

This is the last message in the Genesis series.

We have dealt with creation or the heavens and earth and mankind.

We have dealt with the fall of Satan and the fall of man.

Today we deal with the provision God made for fallen man….

1. Adam And Eve Realized That They Were Uncovered.

Genesis 3:7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings.

A. Adam and Eve had “home-maid” clothes!

B. They tried to cover their nakedness themselves…

1) Adam and Eve had been robbed by Satan –

  • Stripped of their innocence
  • Wounded spiritually in their relationship with God

John 10:10 (NKJV) The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy…

Page 2

2. God Clothed Adam And Eve.

Genesis 3:21 (NKJV) Also for Adam and his wife the LORD God made tunics of skin, and clothed them.

A. Clothed = kethoneth, [keth-o'-neth]; or kuttoneth, [koot-to'-neth]; - from an unused root meaning to cover;

- a covering; a shirt :- tunic, coat, garment, robe.

B. God didn’t try to destroy them, He covered them….

C. EXAMPLE in the Prodigal Son in Luke 15:11-31

1. He was a failure

2. He returned to his father (a type of our Heavenly Father – God)

3. The father covered him…

Luke 15:22 (NKJV) “But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring out the best robe (covering) and put it on him…

4. The “father” restored his dignity

5. Covered up the pig pin and sin!

3. Christians Today Should Be CoveringOthers.

A. Criticism, judgment, and fault finding are not of God!

B. Too many are looking for someone to do one thing wrong so they

can point their finger at them!

Proverbs 24:17 (NKJV) Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, And do not let your heart be glad when he stumbles;

C. Too many are on a “destroy mission.”

Proverbs 14:9 (NKJV) Fools mock at sin, But among the upright there is favor.

Page 3

D. As Christians, We Should Be “Covering” Those Who Fail!

1) Covering them with love and mercy

1 Peter 4:8 (NKJV) And above all things have fervent love for one another, for “love will cover a multitude of sins.”

2) Cover them with prayer so the Holy Spirit can work on them.

James 5:16 (NKJV) Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.

E. Christians don’t destroy each other!

F. There are those who have failed! They have failed their family, or

their friends, or the church, or more importantly, God!

G. Let’s put a covering over them….

Proverbs 17:9 (NKJV) He who covers a transgression seeks love, But he who repeats a matter separates friends.

Galatians 6:1 (NKJV) Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted.

4. The Master Tailor Is Still At Work Today!

A. God is still covering those who sin against Him today.

B. To give Adam and Eve a covering of skin, God gave Adam and Eve

a lesson in the shedding of blood!

  • In order for the coat (covering) to be made, God had to “shed the blood” of an animal.
  • God was giving them the example of sacrifice to receive covering for their sin of disobeying Him…

Page 4

Leviticus 17:11 (NKJV) For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul.’

C. Atonement = Covering

Leviticus 23:26 – 28 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

27 Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement: it shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire unto the Lord.

28 And ye shall do no work in that same day: for it is a day of atonement, to make an atonement for you before the Lord your God.

  • Day of Atonement: Yom Kippur -
  • Most Holy Day of Jewish faith

atonement = kippur, [kip-poor'] - from Hebrew word kaphar

kaphar, [kaw-far']; a primitive root; to cover; to cancel;

appease, cleanse, disannul, forgive, be merciful, pacify, pardon, purge (away), put off, reconcile

D. God is still clothing us today!

TEXT - Isaiah 61:10 (NKJV) I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, My soul shall be joyful in my God; For He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness, As a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments, And as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

D. He Is Clothing Us With Christ!

Galatians 3:27 (NKJV) For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
