The Shire:The land of the hobbits, comprised of different “counties,” including Hobbiton, where Bilbo and Frodo live.

Bree:A town outside of the Shire, across the Brandybuck River; still nearby, and inhabited by both hobbits and men.

Weathertop:a.k.a. Amon Sul, an old watchtower; the place where Frodo is stabbed by the leader of the Nazgul (a.k.a. the Witch King of Angmar).

Orthanc:Saruman’s tower, which is virtually unassailable.

Rivendell:The setting of the Last Homely House, where Elrond and his elven kin live; a place of healing for Frodo.

Carahdras:An evil mountain in the chain known as the Misty Mountains, which will not allow the Fellowship to pass (it snows them in).

Moria:A mine where the dwarves “delved too deep” and awoke a “nameless fear”; the Fellowship must pass through Moria.

Lothlorien:The Golden Wood, a place where Galadriel and other elves live.

Rohan:The Kingdom of the Horse Lords; Theoden’s seat; allies of Gondor.

Helm’s Deep:The refuge of Rohan, built into the mountains. A great battle takesplace here.

Fangorn:An ancient forest, inhabited by Ents, including Treebeard

Gondor:Boromir’s home, the kingdom on the border of Mordor. Aragorn is the king of Gondor by right, although since his ancestor, Isildur, failed to destroy the Ring, Gondor has been ruled by the Steward, who, at present, is Denethor.

Minas Tirith:The White City, the seat of Gondor.

Osgiliath:Outpost of Gondor, which is eventually overrun by orcs.

Pelennor:The plain before the city of Minas Tirith. A great battle takes place here.

Mordor:the land of the Dark Lord, Sauron

Minas Morgul:the tower city of the leader of the Nazgul

Cirith Ungol:a pass, which leads to Shelob’s lair

Mount Doom:the volcano in which the Ring must be destroyed.

The Grey Havens: a land across the sea, to which the elves sail; a “heaven” of sorts.
