Encourage the children to collect old unwanted mobile phones and…

  • Receive gifts and vouchers for your unit
  • Help raise funds for the Irish Heart Foundation
  • Help protect the environment by recycling

Dear Guider,

As you know, each year CGI chooses a charity to support during the year. This year we have chosen the Irish Heart Foundation. Due to the current economic climate, this fundraising scheme does not involve collecting sponsorship money, so hopefully everyone can get involved!

The Irish Heart Foundation in association with The Vodafone Ireland Foundation has set up a new mobile phone recycling scheme which CGI have decided to join. This scheme rewards your Unit with gifts through the collection of old, unwanted mobile phones and at the same time provides vital funding to the Irish Heart Foundation.

For each mobile phone collected your Unit will be awarded with 5 points. These points can then be exchanged for a wide range of gifts or vouchers including arts & craft materials, camping equipment and day trips. The more phones you collect the more gifts you will be entitled to receive.

Should you need any further information please do not hesitate to contact the IHF scheme coordinator, Barbara McGuire, on 1800 303 136.

Good luck with the collection and remember the more phones you collect the more gifts you will receive!

Details of the scheme

The Irish Heart Foundation’s Heart & Stroke Helpline receives thousands of calls every year. People who call the IHF’s Heart & Stroke Helpline have many different needs: They want advice and reassurance on heart healthy living, how to live with their heart condition and how to care for someone with heart disease or stroke. All calls are answered by helpline nurses and are treated confidentially.

Currently the Heart & Stroke Helplineis open from 10am – 5pm Monday to Friday. The Irish Heart Foundation would like to extend these hours to suit more of their callers and with your help they can do this. Through the operation of theMobile phone recycling scheme they hope to be able to raise the funds needed to expand the capabilities of their helpline services.

In exchange for collecting mobile phones and helping the Irish Heart Foundation achieve this goal, your organisation will receive gift points which can be traded in against a host of gifts and vouchers.

Benefits of participation in the scheme

1. The children participating in the scheme see for themselves that helping a charity does not always mean donating money. They realise that they can help the charity, their unit and the environment at the same time

2. Parents benefit too as the cost of equipment can sometimes be centered on fundraising drives carried out in conjunction with parents

3. The Irish Heart Foundation will benefit in the long term by informing the youth of the county of the work of its invaluable service. There are a number of campaigns and resources specifically targeted at the youth of Ireland including:

  • A current campaign operating to protect children from unhealthy food advertising and a simpler food labeling in the form of traffic light signals on food wrappers. This system aims to demystify nutritional information on food packets for parents who are shopping for their children every week.
  • Publications and resources for schools and youth clubs to use such as Bizzy Breaks, Action for Life and Healthy Eating resources.
  • Active lobbying for a significant increase in the price of cigarettes to discourage young people from taking up the habit, and to cut down on tobacco smuggling.
  • Advertising campaigns on the radio and TV on how to recognise the signs of a stroke. This ad is aimed at the whole population and there has already been feedback from children who have recognised the signs of Stroke in a parent and called 999.

About Mobile Phone Recycling

Why are mobile phones so harmful to the environment?

Mobile phones are made up of many toxic substances including arsenic, beryllium, cadmium, copper, lead, mercury and zinc.

When dumped in landfills substances can leak from the mobile and seep in to our groundwater, pollute the soil and contaminate the food chain.

Why is re-using phones preferred to recycling?

  • It contributes to the reduction of CO2 emissions and global warming.
  • It saves valuable resources.
  • The life of the mobile phone is extended by 5 -7 years (if repaired).
  • Significant reduction in environmentally damaging extraction, energy consumption and waste.
  • Re-using second-hand equipment can also often mean a lower price for products, increasing accessibility to those who may not otherwise be able to afford the product.

Dear Parent,

(Insert name of unit) is taking part in a fantastic new fundraising initiative for our unitand we are writing to ask for your support.

The Irish Heart Foundation in partnership with the Vodafone Ireland Foundation has set up a new mobile phone recycling scheme which rewards our unit with gifts and vouchers through the collection of old, unwanted mobile phones.

We are starting the process of collecting old mobile phones for recycling. Each mobile phone collected will earn us points which can then be exchanged for these gifts. Recycling will not only boost our points total but is also great for the environment. Throwing these items in the bin means they will end up in landfill where they can cause pollution.

So why not go green and help us earn extra points? Old mobile phones will be gratefully received and can be handed in to the leader or given to your child to take in.

Thank you for your support.

Yours sincerely
