WHAT IS THE INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE DIPLOMA PROGRAMME?

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme at Terry Parker allows students to participate in an internationally recognized course of study that is recognized by colleges and universities in over 100 countries. The liberal arts curriculum prepares students for the challenges of college like no other high school program. Students exercise their intellectual rigor through elevated international standards while relating their academics to the realities of the world beyond the classroom.

Qualifications for Admission

In order to qualify for admission to the IB Program at Terry Parker, students must submit a completed written application (including writing samples and other forms if not enrolled in a Duval County school), must have scored a level 3 or above on the FCAT Reading test, and we recommend successful completion of Algebra I in their 7th or 8th grade year. Admissions are competitive, as many applications are received, but only a limited number of spots are available!

The Curriculum

IB Diploma Programme students study six courses at higher level or standard level. Students must choose one subject from each of groups 1 to 5, thus ensuring breadth of experience in languages, social studies, the experimental sciences and mathematics. The sixth subject may be an arts subject chosen from group 6, or the student may choose another subject from groups 1 to 5.

Group 1: English A : Literature

Group 2: Spanish B

Group 3: History (Americas)

Group 4: Biology, Physics

Group 5: Mathematical Studies (SL), Math (SL), or Math Higher Level (HL)

In addition, the programme has three core requirements that are included to broaden the educational experience and challenge students to apply their knowledge and understanding.

The Extended Essayis a requirement for students to engage in independent research through an in-depth study of a question relating to one of the subjects they are studying.

Theory of Knowledgeis a course designed to encourage each student to reflect on the nature of knowledge by critically examining different ways of knowing (perception, emotion, language and reason) and different kinds of knowledge (scientific, artistic, mathematical and historical).

Creativity, Action, Servicerequires that students actively learn from the experience of doing real tasks beyond the classroom. Students can combine all three components or do activities related to each one of them separately.

Course of Study

The IB Diploma Programme requires students to test in 6 areas:

  • 4 core academics
  • 1 second language, and
  • 1 chosen subject

Three exams must be taken at Higher Level (HL) and three at Standard Level (SL). Students make an official selection of which 3 subjects will be taken at HL and which 3 subjects will be taken at SL by October of their 12th grade year.

Students will take the same science over a two year period in 11th and 12th grade

Students completing the IB curriculum (all 4 years) are not required to take HOPE, American Government, or Economics courses.
