Carn to Cove September press release – 27th August 2015

Carn to Cove’s autumn season starts this September and there is a whole month of exciting new music, film and the best of Cornish storytelling to keep you going as the evenings start to draw in.

The first show in the season is a performance from Ben Jordan -an American musician from Denver, Colorado, who briefly made his home in Cornwall before settling in Bristol.

This year Ben released his highly anticipated second album, entitled Dream Invisible. Ben's songs range from intimate ballad to high energy foot stomper and everywhere in between. His solo shows are part comedy, part travelogue and always a hair’s breadth from careering off the road. His communication and rapport with the audience is a rare and often hilarious thing to see. Never one to shy away from a road story or a joke before breaking your heart or making you want to get up and dance, Ben is both new & old in the same breath. With ever changing set lists and a prolific output of songs, definitely a live experience worth having more than once.

He’s only playing one date in Cornwall this autumn so make sure you don’t miss him on 11th September @ 7:30pm at the Hay Studio (01208 832574).

Helland Village Hall is holding its first ever music festival on 19th September and will feature two local music acts who are making their first appearance on the Carn to Cove circuit as part of its Music Out There strand. Gareth Lee & Annie Baylis have been described as a slick contemporary folk duo, who have a modern approach to creating a classic sound. They present an intimate set, performing tracks from their debut EP 'A Little Light' and follow-up record 'Future Writer'.‘Gareth and Annie are a fantastic Cornish duo. They play beautifully crafted folk songs , that remind me a little of Richard and Linda thompson's early work. The harmonies are sweet and clear , and Annie's violin work will nail your heart to the ceiling ...’Neil Halstead

The second part of the evening will really get your feet moving and the village hall rafters will be jumping to the sounds of Jonah's Lift - an eclectic folk rock band based in Penryn. They play a collection of original material, up-beat traditional folk tunes from around the world and unique twists on covers. They are highly energetic and their 2 man fiddle section is merciless! Formed in 2007 from a desire to whip audiences into a frenzy and get people dancing, they have regularly performed throughout Cornwall and Devon. For more information about the Helland Festival of Music call Samantha on 01208 72603.

The music continues with the Johanna Graham Quartet who is performing twice at Carn to Cove venues this month. She has been described as a truly gifted singer with "beautiful vocals" (Chrissie Hynde)who is sure to entertain and captivate in equal measure, andJohanna Graham leads a fabulous and award-winning quartet, which has already performed at some of the leading UK jazz venues and festivals and is fast gaining a notable reputation. The quartet comprises three highly accomplished musicians from the West Country: with Martin Bowie providing classy guitar riffs and top level phrasing, insightful double bass playing from the highly experienced Tim Greenhalgh, and exhilarating drumming from Damian Rodd. Celebrated Senegalese composer and praise singer ModouN’DiayeCissokho and his Golden Kora band are coming to Cornwall this September. ModouN’Diayeassaults his own personal blend of Afro Mandingue music with blistering Kora runs that even upon being seen still defy belief! Unlike many West African acts which feature a dominant kora supported by background musicians, ModouN’Diaye Cissokho’s group provides a whole band groove. ModouN’Diayetakes the wheel with the driving force of a true Kora master, but it’s the powerful mandinka bass and drum kit brotherhood with fierce sabar percussion that forms the beating heart of the band. Together they work as one to produce a performance which seamlessly integrates all the elements into a cutting-edge Senegalese sound.

Before the time of pen and paper in West Africa, it was the role of the Cissokho Griot family to preserve the region’s history by passing on stories of creation and culture through song. Entrusted by the Royal Mandingue Empire as advisers since the 14th century, ModouN’Diaye Cissokho’s family are still notorious for producing the most highly -skilled musicians in Senegal’s southern region, the Casamance. And ModouN’Diaye , who left Senegal for the first time aged 18 to back his elder brother Solo Cissokho’s pioneering modern kora performance on a tour spanning between India and Norway, is certainly no exception. The band are coming to Cornwall twice this autumn, but the first shows are on Friday 25th September @ 7pm at Mylor Theatre, Truro College

(01726 879500) and Saturday 26th September @ 7:30pm at AMATA, Penryn (01326 259349).
