The Informal Literary Response

An effective answer should address the prompt in a three paragraph format. You must use evidence from a text studied in class. You must use evidence from personal experiences or observations. You must connect the ideas examined in your paragraphs.

Literature

Topic Sentence: Tell em’ what you’re going to tell em’
  • Explains the idea/argumentof the paragraph
  • Adresses ALL BRANCHES of the Informal Literary Response Question

Support/Examples: Tell em’
  • Use specific examples from the text to support your argument
  • Be sure to explain how the example supports the argument.

Explanations: Tell em’ what you told em’
  • “Put it together” : Make a connection between your evidence and your argument
  • LINK separate evidence together.

Conclusion: Synthesis
  • Show what the result of your argument, your support, and your “putting it together is.”
  • If you were a lawyer, what your evidence leads the jury to do (“find the accused guilty.”)

Personal Experience/Observation

Synthesis:
  • Connect the literary paragraph and the personal observation/experience paragraph together to provide a broader understanding of your position on the prompt.
  • Revisit the prompt/thesis.
  • Revisit the ideas (as a whole) from the first paragraph
  • Revisit the ideas (as a whole) from the second paragraph
  • Blend the ideas in a statement of insight.

NOTE: Think of the paragraph as the connection of your ideas. There IS NOT a minimum or maximum number of words or sentences; instead, you need to deal with (write about) all the elements of the paragraph.
