Mother’s Day

The High Value of a Woman

Community Group Study Questions05.14.17

Overview:

Joanna Gains of the TV show “Fixer Upper” said in a recent blog, “Motherhood can be difficult. It’s not an instant gratification thing all the time. When your kiddos are just babies and you’re changing diapers, or listening to whining constantly, it can feel overwhelming. But … one day you’ll be sitting around a table for your birthday breakfast and you’ll realize that their little hearts are thankful for you. I hope you feel so loved and celebrated this Mother’s Day. And no matter what season you find yourself in, just know that you are doing enough, and you are loved and appreciated.”

The Bible has so much to say about the high calling of motherhood and its correlation to wisdom. Here are just a few verses that help bring this truth home.

Discussion Questions: (Question #1 is for groups that meet after the message.)

  1. What was your biggest takeaway from this week’s message at church? Check your sermon notes.
  1. Look up the following verses from The Message Bible on the wisdom we learn from mothers.

Proverbs 1:7-9

“Start withGod—the first step in learning is bowing down toGod;only fools thumb their noses at such wisdom and learning. Pay close attention, friend, to what your father tells you;never forget what you learned at your mother’s knee.Wear their counsel like flowers in your hair, like rings on your fingers.”

  • What is onething your mom use to tell you that has proven to be very wise?
  • Can you see how this specific truth lines up with the Bible? Explain.

Proverbs 31:30

“Charm can mislead and beauty soon fades. The woman to be admired and praised is the woman who lives in the Fear-of-God.”

  • How do we live in the “Fear-of-God” without walking around feeling like God is out to get us? (See Romans 8:1 if needed)

Proverbs 14:1 (NIV)

“The wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down.”

  • What are ways we can build a house that passes on wisdom to our children?

Personal Application

One thing that many learn from their moms is found in the word wisdom. That can sound a bit overarching, but it seems to prove itself out as truth time and again. One thing we need to understand is that wisdom is not just having insight into knowing the right thing to do, it is also doing it at the right time.
