The “H” (Historical Consciousness) Subscript Bill Lubenow (ARHU)

Courses designated with an “H” subscript will have several primary goals: these courses will introduce to students the significance of historical times as an essential dimension of the events, behaviors, and ideas within and across societies’ cultures. The course should create an awareness of how events, behaviors or ideas exist within the context of time and space, and how they help one understand continuities and discontinuities, permanence and change in societies and cultures. Human experiences should be highlighted historically and whenever appropriate, comparatively or internationally, in order to address what accounts for an event; what occurred prior to and after that event; what was happening simultaneously with that event in other societies and cultures which, by comparison and contrast, illuminate the event.

In order to achieve the above goals, H-courses may utilize time-lines such that students can place all events within a meaningful historical framework. Moreover, it is suggested that H-courses, whenever appropriate, focus on the analysis of primary sources to qualify pre-conceived generalizations among students.
