The Greenbook Initiative

The Greenbook Initiative is a joint project of the United States Departments of Justice and Health & Human Services intended to improve the quality of services provided by local jurisdictions to families threatened both by domestic violence and child abuse or maltreatment. The National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges (NCJFCJ) provides support and technical assistance to each of the six participating local projects.

Research demonstrates that domestic violence against spouses and partners, and child maltreatment or abuse often occur in the same homes. Unfortunately, the support mechanisms currently in place in most communities treat these problems separately, as if they were unrelated. The Greenbook Initiative – named for the green binding on published project guidelines released in 2000 by NCJFCJ – is a multi-year effort to develop working models that improve the quality and coordination of services for families.

Greenbook Initiative Reading Room {This is #10}

Many of the local Greenbook Projects have been the subject of local media coverage. Here’s a sampling.

[Lisa: here’s the key to what’s below. Green articles we either have secured permission or can buy pretty cheaply. Yellow need more follow-up. Red are instances where the cost seemed prohibitive to me, but maybe NCJFCJ will want to spend that kind of money anyway for one or more of them? At minimum, we could include the story in the list with a two-line description, and then post a link to the newspapers’ archive, along with a warning from us that it’ll cost them a couple bucks to download it]

·  St. Louis County included in new federal domestic violence program; The St. Charles County Business Record, October 19, 2001 {we can buy this for $100}

·  Blaming victims: Abused women should not suffer again by having their children taken away, guest editorial by Kenneth J. Theisen, {check to see pub is right} San Francisco Daily Journal, October 12, 2001 {they don’t seem to be able to answer the question about online reprint rights]

·  Coordinate efforts, Guest editorial by Judge Susan Block, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, August 2, 2001 {we can’t put up a link, but we can post the story (freelancer retains rights}

·  Grafton County gets $1m for domestic abuse study, The Manchester Union Leader, April 6, 2001 {need to follow up more}

·  Our national black eye, Editorial, San Jose Mercury News, April 4, 2001 {they want $900 for the privilege}

·  US offers help in taking new approach to family violence; Grafton County chosen for pilot project, Boston Globe – New Hampshire Weekly, April 1, 2001 {$750/year}

·  County gets money to combat abuse, The Register Guard, March 6, 2001 (not available online, but I’m trying for permission to key it in ourselves)

·  Spousal strife can be cruel for kids, Salt Lake Tribune, February 19, 2001, http://www.sltrib.com/2001/feb/02192001/utah/72840.htm {they gave us permission outright}

·  Non-abusing parent, children need help from court system, guest editorial by Judges Leonard P. Edwards and William G. Jones, San Jose Mercury News, February 15, 2001 {$900, as above)

·  Grants take on violence, San Jose Mercury News, January 15, 2001

[Lisa – didn’t the Edwards op-ed run someplace else, beside San Jose?]
